Britain’s favorite curry is revealed as the British claim most are too spicy to handle

TIKKA masala is Britain’s favorite curry; 43 percent admit they can’t tolerate anything spicier.

It was voted number one in a poll of 2,000 adults, with korma and butter chicken – both also on the milder end of the spice scale – coming in second and third.

But notoriously hot dishes like vindaloo or phaal are nowhere to be found in the top 10.

The survey, which was conducted on behalf of Onken prior to National Curry Week, from October 7 to 13, showed that 89 percent of adults eat curry.

And they enjoy such dishes on average five times a month.

Following the survey, Paddy McGuinness collaborated with the yoghurt brand to create a ‘Curry In a Rush’ menu featuring Masterchef 2024 winner Brin Pirathapan, as part of its ‘Feed Your Inner Happiness’ campaign.

Paddy said: “I’m going on tour soon, and believe me, the temptation of a takeaway curry is real.

“Onken brought me together with Brin to teach me how to make three quick and easy curries that even I can make.

“And I can tell you: I absolutely succeeded. I’ve even added my own top tips so you can make time at home to nurture your inner happiness.”

Other popular curries include biryani and rogan josh to round out the top five.

While jalfrezi, balti, madras, bhuna and saag complete the top 10.

The survey also found that 41 percent have tried making their favorite takeaway curry at home.

And given its popularity, it’s perhaps no surprise that tikka masala (31 percent) was the most tried, followed by korma (29 percent) and madras (18 percent).

Brin Pirathapan said: ‘There are so many tasty curries packed with different flavours, but a third of us only have one to two curry dishes in our repertoire.

‘So I’ve created three quick and easy ‘Curry In a Rush’ recipes, with the best tips for you and Paddy to master at home.’

Those who make curry at home typically spend 45 minutes making the dish.

34 percent prepare the meal from scratch and 35 percent use ready-made sauces.

But despite this, research from OnePoll shows that 58 percent believe home-made curries are never as tasty as restaurant or takeaway.

Those who feel this way claim that homemade efforts fall short in terms of taste (68 percent), thickness of sauce (34 percent) and spiciness (34 percent).

As well as the creaminess of the sauce (31 percent) and the tenderness of the meat (30 percent).

Mathilde van Roon, head of Onken, Emmi UK, said: “The statistics show that Brits love curry but are put off by the time it takes to make one at home, and they struggle to get the same flavors and to get creaminess.”

Paddy and Brin’s best hacks for ‘curry in a hurry’

SQUEASY DOES IT: Use garlic and ginger paste to save time on chopping.

TENDER LOVING CARE: Marinate the meat with yogurt to make it more tender.

A QUICK SIDE: Buy some microwave rice and a pack of ready-made naan bread.

SPARE TIME: Cook the recipe in batches, transfer the excess to a container and place in the refrigerator or freezer for another day.

TOO HOT TO USE: A spoonful of natural yoghurt works wonders with curries if you have enjoyed the heat too much.
