British woman on death row, 27 Muslim prisoners take part in Navratri fasting and rituals

NEW DELHI: In a remarkable show of religious harmonya group Islamic prisoners and a British woman on death row take part in the nine-day event Navratri soon at the county jail in this city, according to officials who spoke Thursday.
The group, which is among the 217 inmates housed at the prison, including 17 women, also took part in traditional prayers inside the prison building.
Chief Inspector of the Prison Mijaji Lal informed PTI, “Twenty-seven Muslim men, along with British national Ramanpreet Kaur, are observing the nine-day fast. They also took part in a havan (ritual sacrifice) on Ashtami.”
Kaur, who was sentenced to death in 2023, was found guilty of murdering her husband in Puwaya in 2016, the prison official added.
To support the fasting prisoners, the prison administration provided them with a daily ration of 750 grams of boiled potatoes, 500 grams of milk, fruit and sugar. Moreover, they were given puja (prayer) materials to perform the necessary rituals during the festival.
