I’m an interior design expert – 3 mistakes will make your Christmas decorations look cheap
WITH less than 11 weeks until Christmas, some of us will already be thinking about how we can decorate our homes for the holidays.
But before we get out all the festive decor, an expert has warned that three mistakes can make them look cheap.
Luckily, they’ve shared their top tips on how to keep our decorations from looking tacky.
Ryan Calvert, product expert at Hiatt Hardware, says: “This year, more and more people are turning to sophisticated and minimalist Christmas decorations.
“While we want to celebrate the holidays, many want to do so in a way that enhances the style of their home rather than overwhelms it.
“These tips will help create a space that feels both festive and elegant, and add a sense of sophistication to your holiday celebrations.”
1. Choose a Christmas color scheme
One of the most important decisions we can make when it comes to Christmas decorations is choosing the color scheme.
If it doesn’t match our current furniture, it automatically makes the decor look cheap and tacky.
While we’re eager to celebrate the holidays, many want to do so in a way that enhances the style of their home rather than overpowering it. With these tips you can create a space that feels both festive and elegant
Ryan explains: “It’s important to choose a Christmas color scheme that complements your existing decor and furnishings.
“While traditional festive colors like bright red and green can work well, it’s easy to go overboard.
“The great thing about Christmas decorations is that there is something for every style!
“Whether you’re looking for an icy winter wonderland with icy blues and silvers or a cozy, rustic vibe with soft whites and taupe tones, cohesion is key.
“The right color scheme can make your holiday decor look intentional and not overwhelming.
“If you’re looking for a more traditional yet sophisticated Christmas aesthetic, consider sticking with a classic holiday palette.
“Shades like snow white, rich burgundy, gold, deep green and subtle metallic accents can bring elegance to your space.
“Whatever your choice, be sure to mix and match shades to add depth, otherwise everything will blend together.”
2. Determine your points of interest
Another important thing to consider when decorating your home is its location.
Choosing the right focal point in a room for specific decorations is essential.
Ryan says: “For avid decorators, the decision of where to display your Christmas decorations may be obvious, but if you’re new to Christmas decorating, choosing a focal point is a good way to start.
“Whether it’s a Christmas tree by the window, a festive mantelpiece or a grand entryway, use the space you have to choose the best Christmas decor for that space.
“For example, your mantelpiece is ideal for hanging stockings and placing festive streamers, while your front door is the perfect place for a seasonal wreath or twinkling lights.”
‘Perfect Christmas presents’
A SAVVY shopper has shared the bargains she found at Home Bargains and people are saying they are perfect as Christmas presents.
Jess Osborne shared the money-saving deal on social media and people were keen to buy the goodies to stash away for Christmas.
Jess spotted the bargains in Home Bargains and was shocked to see they cost just £3.99, despite normally retailing for £50.
She said: “Whind products £3.99 Home Bargains, never used before but it says RRP (suggested retail price) is £49.99.”
The beauty fan shared a photo of her two purchases, including the Whind Atlas Pure Purifying Cream Mask for £3.99
It usually costs £30 for the luxury face mask which contains green clay and salicylic acid to help combat oily and combination skin.
But that’s not all, she also bought the brand’s Sahara Silk disappearing cream exfoliator.
Jess was able to get it for £3.99, despite it costing £50 on their site.
The vanishing cream contains pomegranate enzymes, rice bran and rhassoul clay to remove impurities and chemically and physically exfoliate the skin.
The message has been shared with Extreme Coupons and Bargains UK group, a private Facebook group with 2.5 million members.
3. Classify your Christmas trees
If you have opposing colors on your Christmas tree, it will immediately look tacky, according to experts.
Ryan suggests: “The Christmas tree is the heart of any holiday home, but if you’re worried it will look too busy, there are plenty of ways to arrange it.
“Rather than going all out with bright, clashing ornaments, consider a more sophisticated approach with ornaments in a uniform color palette such as white, gold or silver.
“For an even more chic look, you can use glass or metal ornaments.
“Or even choose an artificial tree in a chic, minimalist style, such as matte white or deep green with subtle glitter.”
