Amit Shah, Eknath Shinde and Eknath Fadnavis should all resign, the opposition says
MUMBAI: The opposition on Sunday demanded the resignation of Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde and deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis over the murder of NCP’s ex-MLA Baba Siddique, questioning how the public could feel safe if a ruling party politician was killed .
The Congress also demanded the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, saying “a twin-engine government demands dual responsibility”.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and party member Rahul Gandhi expressed their shock over the killing in messages to X.
“The government must take responsibility, and justice must prevail,” Rahul said, while Kharge wrote that “justice must be ensured, and the Maharashtra government must order a thorough and transparent investigation… Accountability is paramount interest”.
Congress functionary Vijay Wadettiwar said, “The Mahayuti government should put up a billboard telling the public, ‘You take care of your own safety. We cannot take care of your safety’.”
Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray said that instead of providing security to the public, the government is providing security cover to traitors and their children, and even to their drivers.
“Where are the three Singhams now: the CM and the two deputy CMs?” asked Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut, alleging that CM Shinde was interfering in the management of the police station.
“The police are used for extortion or to attack opponents. Her posts are occupied by corruption. What can the public expect (from her)?” he added.
In response, Fadnavis said the opposition was focused only on the seat. “We are focused on Maharashtra, its development and security. Let them keep their attention on the seat and say what they want to say,” he said.
Addressing a press conference at the AICC headquarters in New Delhi, party spokesperson Ragini Nayak and Rajya Sabha MP from Maharashtra and Congress minority wing president Imran Pratapgarhi accused the state government of allowing law and order to slide downhill.
Nayak said CM Shinde, Fadnavis and Home Minister Shah should resign. “If this doesn’t happen, the public is prepared to remove them from office,” she said.
