Stunning California beach town tears itself apart over ‘MAGA’ sign on public library… but all is not as it seems

A beautiful beach town in California is at war about plans to install a $ 7,000 bronze 'Maga' plaque on their public library.

Huntington Beach City Panel voted 6-0 to approve the design of a new sign to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the library on Tuesday evening.

With the slogan: 'Magical, seductive, galvanizing, adventurous' written in the style of an actrostic poem, the first letter of each word describes 'Maga' in the vertical.

The infamous acronym synonymous with President Donald Trump and his Republican supporters translate into: 'Make America Great Again'.

Huntington Beach is just south of Los Angeles and the home base of around 200,000 people, is a Gop bulb, with its hard local government that previously reaches the headlines for banning pride flags and explaining a 'non-sanctive' city.

But it is a completely right -wing city council, led by Mayor Pat Burns, a fierce opposition to the open sign by hundreds of people who have flooded their meeting.

Residents are bitterly divided between those who support the sign because it fits with the republican loyalty of the city – and those who think that political 'propaganda' has no place in a public library.

Forty people gave speeches against the plaque and booed loudly when the municipal councilors voted to approve it, while according to De La Times, six locals spoke to it.

More than 300 people also sent e -mails to the committee that question the use of the political slogan, according to the daily pilot reporter Matt Szabo, who was present during the meeting of Tuesday evening.

The plaque will be financed by private donations at an estimated cost of $ 7,000.

Resident Barbara Richardson said that the design of the board is so bad that she thought it was a joke when she first heard about it.

“It turned out that the joke was on me, because this plaque is really the real design,” she told De La Times.

'From far away it seems that the plaque celebrates Maga for 50 years, because the word is dead center in the middle of the plaque.

“This is where someone's eye is drawn to a political slogan. Can political slogans even be installed on city buildings? Why should the city not be neutral? '

Former councilor Natalie Moser closed the plaque as a political 'propaganda'.

“Libraries are spaces for knowledge, community and inclusion,” she told De La Times.

'They are not aids for political messages. History warns us of what happens when public spaces are manipulated for political purposes.

'In many historical moments during authoritarian regimes in times of intense social control, symbols were placed in order not to celebrate shared values, but to make control of it and to rewrite history.

“These tactics are well documented and studied in history books because of their dangerous impact on free societies.”

Jennifer Carey, Deputy City Manager of Huntington Beach, said that the board was drawn up by various people in the local director.

“The design of the plaque was a collaboration effort, which included input from various municipal councilors and the community,” Carey told the La Times.

The only chairman of the Community and Library Services Committee Austin Edsell, which was appointed by the All-Conservative Huntington Beach City Council, said that the board was 'very appropriate' for the city.

“It's a great library,” said Edselell, a former president of the young Republicans of Orange County, told De La Times.

“Honoring and celebrating this way, I think it's very appropriate for us.”
