Police end silent protest in support of Sonam Wangchuk
NEW DELHI: More than fifty protesters, including women, who had spoken out in silent solidarity with climate activist Sonam Wangchuk’s hunger strike, have been detained by police near Ladakh Bhawan Sunday in the capital. Wangchuk protested at Ladakh Bhawan against the inclusion of the Union Territory in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution to ensure special protection for tribal regions. Police said they had not been given permission to protest. “It started between 1pm and 1.30pm when they reached near Ladakh Bhawan and sat on the way. We asked them not to do that but they didn’t listen so they were arrested,” said an officer.
The protesters included more than 20 women, who were taken to a nearby police station and later released, the officer added. Police also clarified that Wangchuk was not being held. “He came out and sat in a public place but later entered Ladakh Bhawan,” police said.
