My house was damp proof, but I still had slugs – a purchase from Amazon stopped them

As temperatures drop, homeowners may notice more snails entering their home.

These hard-skinned mollusks are attracted to cozy, warm spaces away from the cold weather, and they are especially attracted to damp environments such as kitchens and bathrooms.

Slugs tend to crawl in through holes under doors, cracks in walls, and other small openings that serve as an entry point.

This can be a nightmare for homeowners, because no one wants to accidentally step on a slug on the kitchen floor.

One person is currently experiencing this problem now that the colder days have arrived.

She turned to the Mrs Hinch cleaning tips Facebook group to ask for advice after discovering a slug on her kitchen floor.

The woman wrote: “Is it a thing to have slugs in the house these days?

“I had damp control done and still have them; they only seem to be on the moisture proof side of my kitchen.

Many people quickly responded in the comments section to share their advice as they had encountered the same problem.

One person suggested a cheap Amazon purchase that she found useful.

They have included a photo of the EcoWidow Natural Slug and Snail Repellent Killer Spray, which costs £13.50.

The product claims to be an effective, fast-acting alternative to snail killer pellets and copper tape. It is also said to be ideal for gardens, plants and vegetables.

The person who recommended this product wrote: “We had a lot when we moved into our new house.

“Apparently they have a great sense of smell and are attracted to dog food. The previous owners had dogs.

“We’ve used this spray around doors and even applied copper tape (used for plant pots), we haven’t seen any for a few weeks now.”

On Amazon, the spray has an overall rating of 4.1 out of 5.

Reviewer

One reviewer wrote: “I highly recommend this product. I used it indoors and outdoors.

“Outside, there has been a very noticeable reduction in the number of slugs in my garden and on the fence.

“I don’t have to spray it as often now, just occasionally. I had a problem with slugs in my new home for several weeks until I found their entry points and blocked them off.

“This product worked very well: slugs do not pass where you spray it.

Sprayed once

“Smells pleasant, so doesn’t cause any problems when used indoors, and does an excellent job against snails.”

Another added: “I’ve had slugs on my ground floor for 16 years, despite getting a new floor.

“No idea where they came in, but every morning there were snail trails everywhere. I bought this based on reviews.

“Sprayed once around the edges of the rooms and into the tank.

“I found about 20 dead, dried out slugs the first few days, but now nothing.

“I actually like the scent, unlike some other reviewers. And it doesn’t stick around. This is what I would call a perfect product.”

5 Money-saving tips for autumn/winter

1. Make your home draught-free

It takes time and money to heat your home, so it’s important that you do everything you can to keep the heat in. Close your doors and windows and fill any gaps with weatherstripping.

2. Turn down your thermostat

According to Energy UK, lowering the thermostat by just one degree Celsius can reduce your heating costs by up to 10% and save you around £85 a year. And if you don’t have a thermostat, installing one can save you up to $70 per year!

3. Move furniture

Ensure that large, bulky furniture such as sofas does not block the radiators.

4. Wash clothes at a lower temperature and add extra spin cycle

Unless it is bedding, towels or very dirty items, turn the temperature down to 20 or 30 degrees and rotate the machine twice to remove excess water.

5. Heat the person, not the house

There is no point in heating up a room with no one in it, so pay close attention to which radiators are on.
