My opinion

There is nothing better than a good golf round to make the juices flow – and the wallet out.

My first round of 2025 resulted in a respectable score (not respectable enough to share publicly), but my fellow players offered a soft encouragement that I might improve -if I had thrown away my 25 -year clubs.

Bought on the internet, I’m not even sure what they are.

Fed by thoughts to hit fairways and greens on a more regular basis, I booked for a modified fit at American Golf in Hazel Grove, GTR Manchester.

Buying new clubs is intimidating – with an enormous amount of choice and price.

I also needed a bag, so after a chat about my skills and golf heap on the future, torn expert adviser Steve Steve on three sets clubs that are supplied with bags and they were all less than £ 1,000.

‘The results were immediately noticeable’

To start with, I took out my own 7 iron and hit a ball on a computer screen, and the technology mapped the speed, height and spider of the ball together with the landing distance and how far it rolled.

I hit a respectable 150 meters and was then offered three newer clubs to hit from Ben Ross, Cobra and Callaway.

The results were immediately noticeable – I got it about 25 meters away each.

Steve then gave some minor adjustments to my swing and I tried a driver and a hybrid.

He gently pointed to my posture for my forest was exactly the same as my irons – something I never realized that should be different – and gave encouragement on my swing.

After he investigated all the information, he advised one of the three sets of clubs for me – and I felt reassured that his recommendation was not the for the most expensive club.

I left with a set of golf balls – because all golfers always buy some new balls – and a reassurance that I knew which clubs I would buy and also felt something like a free golf lesson.
