Peek inside the ‘hurricane-proof’ mansion built by an insurance executive who spent $25,000 on the front door alone
A “hurricane-proof” mansion built by a former insurance executive is for sale for nearly $6 million.
The French Tudor-style home in Wellington, Florida, survived the recent Hurricanes Helene and Milton thanks to their renovations, which cut the owner’s insurance premium in half.
The property is for sale at One Sotheby’s.
Kishan Khanna and his wife Diane bought the 5,677-square-foot home in 2018 for $1.3 million.
They have since upgraded the home to be “hurricane proof” and are now selling their newly upgraded home for $5.89 million.

Khanna installed hurricane-resistant windows and doors, expanded the garage and triple-insulated it, added a generator and leak detector, a water filtration system and renovated the roof

Khanna told Mansion Global: ‘It’s a very strong, very beautiful door. It really makes the entrance grand. The underlying [idea] was to make it safe, but also to make it look better.”
Before the state of Florida was ravaged by recent devastating storms, the Khannas originally planned to lower their insurance premiums – which they achieved.
‘We were able to halve the premium. I just pat myself on the back for doing that,” Khanna said.

Wellington did not experience the full force of Hurricane Milton, but a tornado spawned by the storm ripped through the city causing chaos for residents
Recalling staying awake last week listening to the winds of the category three storm, Khanna said: ‘I was up until 3.45am that morning. The wind was so strong; the sound of the wind, I had never heard anything like it before’
Although Wellington was not in the direct path of Hurricane Milton, the house suffered minimal damage from one of the dozens of tornadoes Milton spawned throughout Florida.
However, homes in Wellington were seen with their roofs shredded, cars destroyed and houses torn apart.
Florida resident Sam Rider shared it The Palm Beach Post how his son held his arm as Rider was lifted into the air, while the storm raged through his house.
Rider told the outlet, “It was very emotional. We survived. We had zero defense.”

The beautiful home on 3.5 acres features four bedrooms, four and a half bathrooms and a five-car garage, as well as an 80-foot heated outdoor pool and full-size pickle ball court.
Chad Bishop, a broker with One Sotheby’s International Realty, told the store he liked the combination of the polo fields, pool and pickleball court, which offers something for people of all ages.
“Everything is within golf cart driving distance. That is the biggest positive for someone who is interested in the season and comes here for the equestrian period,” said Khanna.

Khanna, who has played polo since he was a boy at Indian boarding school, says his favorite part, however, is the 200-acre polo fields in the backyard.
The private property offers riding trails right on the doorstep and a front row seat to the world famous polo championships that take place in Wellington every year, attracting celebrities such as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle and many other big names.
