A third of Brits now buy pajamas specifically to wear outside the home
A THIRD of Brits have bought pajamas specifically to wear outside the home.
A survey of 2,000 adults found that as many as 10 percent own three or more pairs for this purpose.
While 40 percent are also known to wear pajamas during everyday tasks such as gardening, driving and running errands.
Other scenarios include taking the kids to school, walking the dog and even on trips to the seaside.
And of those who own pajamas, it appears that 18 to 24 year olds are leading the trend; 74 percent have worn them out at some point.
In contrast, only 32 percent of those over 55 have done this.
The research was commissioned by sleepwear designer Peter Alexander, who is also a quiz where you can discover which type of pajama wearer you are.
It covers what you look for in your PJ, how to choose it, your preferred fabric and what time of day you put it on – are you more interested in style, comfort, coziness or functionality?
Brand founder and creative director Peter Alexander said: “The boundaries between the time we spend at work and the time we spend relaxing are blurring.
“This trend seems to extend to loungewear and everyday style.
“Wearing pajamas outside is like taking a piece of home with you everywhere: cozy, carefree and unapologetically yourself.”
The survey also found that 67 percent of adults wear pajamas and own an average of four sets.
And of those who own a pair, 32 percent consider putting on a new pair as one of their favorite things.
While 26 percent of those who own a set admit they would happily wear it all the time if they could.
While 27 percent admit there are times when they spend the entire day in their beloved nightwear without changing.
And 28 percent revealed that the first thing they do when they get home is change out of their work clothes and into their bedtime clothes.
The appeal of such clothes includes how comfortable they feel (69 percent), the sense of coziness they provide (56 percent) and the feeling of relaxation they get when wearing them (50 percent).
Nearly a fifth (16 percent) associate childhood memories with PJs, further increasing their appeal.
Non-negotiables for PJs are comfort (82 percent), price (64 percent), material (62 percent), fit (59 percent) and style (49 percent).
And the most popular material is cotton (54 percent).
It also emerged that 25 percent of respondents and their families own matching pajamas, and that 31 percent own at least one Christmas pair.
The survey, conducted via OnePoll, found that most people (60 percent) are likely to buy their own PJs, but 15 percent rely on others to buy them.
While 54 percent have bought nightwear as a gift for someone else.
Peter Alexander added: “Comfort isn’t just for nighttime, so neither are pajamas.
“We feel most relaxed and comfortable in our pajamas, so why wouldn’t you want those feelings all day long?
“There’s joy in letting the outside world see you at your most relaxed – comfort doesn’t have to stay behind closed doors.”
