Rachel Reeves’ boast about Heathrow sparks hilarity in the City
Rachel Reeves’ boast that Heathrow needs to ‘expand their VIP section’ to accommodate all the high-rollers coming for her investment summit has caused some hilarity in the city.
Her comments, quoted in the Financial Times, were ridiculed in the comments section as the Chancellor did not seem to realize that many tycoons land their private jets at smaller, more discreet airports and would not be seen dead with the hi-polloi at Heathrow .
VIPs “don’t land at LHR, it’s Northolt,” said one reader. Others said Reeves shouldn’t brag about moguls flying to Britain because of emissions.
‘Non-socialist’: Rachel Reeves’ comments about private jets have caused some hilarity in the city
Yet another mocked the Chancellor for being non-socialist: ‘I bet Reeves is excited about all these wealthy individuals flying into Heathrow. She has an expensive Gucci bag and a top-end chalet in Verbier in mind for a week in the New Year.’
Experts say business flights tend to avoid commercial airports. The most popular in Britain is Farnborough, Hampshire, which accounts for almost 30 percent of inbound business flights so far this year, according to aviation data provider WingX.
Biggin Hill in Kent and RAF Northolt in Middlesex are also top destinations, but Heathrow is not.
Heathrow said it expected many VIPs and would ensure it had sufficient resources to cope.
