'Real democracies function differently': India slams Pakistan in UN for raising Kashmir issue
NEW DELHI: India on Wednesday sharply condemned Pakistan for raising the Kashmir issue again at the United Nations session. Rajiv Shukla criticized the neighboring country for fueling disinformation in the valley, saying “real democracies function differently”.
“Let me be clear. True democracies function differently. The people of Jammu and Kashmir turned out in record numbers in the recently concluded free and fair elections. No amount of disinformation and disinformation will change the facts on the ground,” Shukla said.
“A delegation has once again used this exalted forum to spread lies and untruths. It is common for this delegation to resort to misinformation and disinformation. This delegation tends to measure the world’s largest democracy by similar standards,” he added.
Pakistan has consistently spread disinformation about the situation in Jammu and Kashmir. However, the recent parliamentary elections in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, held in three phases on September 18, September 25 and October 1, demonstrated a strong commitment to democracy. In the election, turnout was impressive, with Phase 1 recording 61.38%, Phase 2 57.31% and Phase 3 a remarkable 69.9%. This high participation rate reflects the continued confidence that the people of India have in their democratic institutions, Shukla said.
Earlier this year, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif asked India to reverse its “unilateral and illegal” actions in Jammu and Kashmir, citing the 2019 abrogation of Article 370, which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir.
“India has rejected Pakistani proposals for mutual strategic restraint against the regime. His leadership has often threatened to cross the Line of Control and take over Azad Kashmir,” Shehbaz Sharif had alleged.
“I urge this delegation to participate more constructively in this forum, rather than using it for their divisive political agenda,” Shukla said.
“We will fight the virus of disinformation together and have a positive and reliable impact on peace and a better world,” he added.
