Google Messages on Android could soon get a big photo sharing boost
- A new photo sharing option has been discovered in Google Messages
- It would enable sharing of higher resolution images via RCS
- For now, the relevant code is hidden in the beta version of the app
Google continues to promote Google Messages as the universal messaging app for Android – and it could soon introduce a new feature that improves the photo-sharing experience for users, something that’s an important part of any chat app.
As noted by the team at Android Authorityhidden code in the latest beta version of Google Messages for Android can be enabled to activate a photo quality selector: you can choose from “original quality” (HD+) or “reduced quality” (HD).
Although you often want to share photos in the best quality possible, the benefit of the reduced quality option is a smaller file size, so the message sends and receives faster and takes less time. facts.
This also requires enabling the more advanced RCS feature, instead of plain old text messaging. As it stands now, photos sent via RCS in Google Messages have significantly better resolution than SMS, but are still compressed from their original size.
Available soon

As always with this kind of code, there’s no guarantee that Google will decide to keep the feature and put it into the app properly. However, it makes sense that an option like this would be included, to match similar options in apps like WhatsApp.
It’s not clear from this sneak preview whether the “original quality” will actually send the photo at its original size, or at a resolution somewhere between the standard currently used in the app and the actual dimensions of the image.
This is the latest discovery from an Android Authority contributor @AssembleDebugwho also noted a number of other minor changes that may be coming to Google Messages, including adjustments to the position and appearance of read receipt indicators.
It also looks like Google Messages will soon show you timestamps for individual messages, and show multiple warnings for “sensitive content” in messages. Look out for official announcements from Google in due course.
