NEW DELHI: Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on Friday said he is probably “one of the most cheated judges in the entire system”. “I hope you know how many trolls I have received. I am probably the most deceived judge in the entire system. I will just say a shayari:”

The CJI was speaking at the farewell meeting organized by the Association of Supreme Court Lawyers (SCBA) in his honor. Justice Chandrachud is retiring as CJI and will depart from office on November 10. However, today was his last official day at the court.

The outgoing CJI also recounted a conversation with his father YV Chandrachud, who has also served as the Chief Justice of India, and said, “He (my father) bought this small flat in Pune. He said, “I know I’ll never stay there.” He said, ‘I’m not sure how long I’ll be with you right up until the last day of your term as judge. I said why is that? He said, if you feel like your moral integrity or your intellectual integrity is ever compromised, I want you to know that you have a roof over your head being compromised, either as a lawyer or as a judge, because you don’t have a place of your own have.”
The CJI also acknowledged that judges have their own limitations in dealing with every case of injustice presented to them in the court. “In court you realize that you cannot cure every injustice that comes your way every day as a judge. Some injustices fall within the domain of the rule of law, others go beyond what the rule of law can lead a judge to do.” a solution,” CJI said.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal was all praise for CJI Chandrachud and called him “one of the greatest judges”. “His qualities are all qualities of one of the greatest judges of the country. I had the privilege of arguing before his father. He was CJI and was 7 years and 14 days. CJI Chandrachud had to match his father. I would say that you were ahead of him,” Sibal noted.
SCBA Vice President Rachana Srivastava, during the welcome address, referred to the outgoing CJI as the “most remarkable and visionary lawyer in the history of the Indian judiciary”. “Judge Chandrachud’s tenure was marked by his deep commitment to the Constitution and his unyielding belief in the rule of law. His statements have redefined the relationship between state and individual for the purpose of justice,” Srivastava said.
