But if you think you can provide the ideal environment and lifestyle for a dog, you might want to listen.

This comes as an expert in the field, Amir Anwary, has taken to TikTok to draw attention to five popular breeds he would never own for a plethora of reasons, including high vet bills.

Sausage dog

The first choice to make the list was the adorable dachshund – also known as the sausage dog – which the guru warned is “prone to back problems.”

In the videoAmir explained that the intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) to which the puppies are susceptible can range from mild back pain to complete paralysis behind the limbs.

Although this can be corrected with surgery, the operation is “extremely burdensome and extremely expensive.”

“I, as a dog owner, would not want to risk getting a dachshund for this reason,” he said, adding that as many as one in four of every wiener dog “will be affected by IVDD.”

“It’s a no from me.”

While other experts have said this breed is “great for first-time owners” and “great with children,” Labradors are “very food-driven” and there seems to be no end to their appetites.

According to Amir, who posts under the username @amirthevetNot only will they ‘pick anything off the floor’, but they also have a tendency to become ‘overweight’ as time goes on.

“This is actually a genetic issue in Labradors: they are prone to weight gain,” Amir warned, adding that it is “impossible to keep them lean.”

They are characterized by skin folds – and these skin folds can also cause quite a few problems, such as dermatitis, Amir claimed.

“It’s an infection between the skin folds because they retain moisture, which is not ideal.”

The vet warned animal lovers to avoid this breed if possible, adding that Sharp Peis ”also suffer from a condition called entropion”.

This is where the upper eyelid folds over the eye, which can cause damage to the cornea.

Belgian Malinois

Another breed that ended up in the clip was the Belgian Malinois – a dog that Amir says is ‘way too smart’.

Not only is this breed intelligent and requiring ”way too much mental stimulation”, but the wet alert Belgian Malinois likes to be active all the time.

“There aren’t enough hours in my day to keep a Belgian Malinois happy and stimulated – and if you don’t keep them stimulated, they will become destructive.”

The fifth and final breed to make the shortlist was the adorable French Bulldog, also known as ‘Frenchies’.

The vet shared his assessment of the adorable pooch, saying: ‘Oh my word, they’re allergic to planet earth – and if it’s not allergies, it’s back problems.’
