Dealbook series: How to influence rates of American companies
‘Rates have never worked unless you want to punish your own population’
We have asked DealBook readers how rates have influenced their companies. On Wednesday we have a reaction from Thomas Johns, an owner of National roofingA private company based in Albuquerque that installs and repairs roofing for commercial customers, such as government and military buildings, hospitals, airports, production centers, data communication buildings and other facilities.
The company generates no less than $ 20 million a year and employs between 100 and 150 people.
He writes:
I started this company 50 years ago. I left the daily operation of the company, but I am still an owner. Rates directly affect only 1 percent to 2 percent of the products that we offer in our roof company. But the uncertain economic circumstances have forced our customers to change their attitude from growth and renovation programs to non-spending mode.
That means that our costs are ultimately two to five times higher because we had to absorb more risks. We have stored material that we may not be able to sell because it seems that our customers will withdraw their expenses.
That is what we saw during the pandemic and we see it again. At the time we kept our people on the payroll, even with the withdrawal in jobs. We have lost $ 2 million in two years to keep everyone employed. That was to keep families fed and able to get vaccinations. We bought lunches.
Although most products we use are made in this country, most of our tools are manufactured abroad. For example, a critical robot -like welder that we use goes from $ 10,000 to $ 30,000 – who can pay for that?
There has also been a problem with manufacturers who withheld stocks to buy prices, something we saw during Covid. That is why we took a hit of $ 5 million to $ 12 million. We expect more from that.
At the moment I would say that the situation has added an extra 10 to 20 percent to our costs. That can of course get much worse. We do everything we can not to pass on the price increases. But that cuts our margins.
The other difficulty is in our federal contracts. The majority of our economy in this part of New Mexico is driven by government dollars with all air force bases here and national laboratories such as the Los Alamos National Laboratory. But the federal government can be misleading in its contracts with suppliers like us. You sign an agreement to do the project for X -Dollars and it is etched in Steen. That’s all you get. If our costs rise, there is no story.
Rates have never worked unless you want to punish your own population – that’s what this does.
