To rule out irregularities, NMC asks medical colleges to submit details of admissions – Times of India
This includes the Entrance Examination Number for Admitted Students (NEET), marks obtained in 10+2 (Physics, Chemistry, Biology), Merit Number, Date of Birth, Subcategory (SC/ST/Non-reserved) and the fees charged for the same brought annually, among other things.
Officials said this was done to ensure that all MBBS admissions are strictly according to merit and not beyond the sanctioned admission capacity. “Earlier, the last date for submitting details was November 8, but many colleges have not filled the required information or have partially filled it. Hence, we have given a deadline of November 23 to the medical colleges to submit the required information,” B. Srinivas , secretary, NMC told TOI.
Last year, NMC conducted an informal exercise to check whether MBBS admissions by colleges were in compliance with regulations. It was found that there were cases, at least 30 to 40 cases, where the admission was not in accordance with the rules. For example, sources said, students who secured less than 50% marks in 10+2 (physics, chemistry, biology) were admitted.
The NMC Secretary said that for the first time, they have developed an online monitoring system to ensure faithful compliance with admission standards and further promote transparency and accountability in medical education. There are around 1.20 lakh medical seats for students in government and private medical colleges in the country.
Srinivas said that medical colleges, while granting admission to MBBS courses, should ensure that it does not fall outside their sanctioned intake capacity. Colleges must also ensure that students meet eligibility requirements regarding age and qualifying grades.
All students admitted to the MBBS course are expected to have a qualified NEET-UG with the required percentile; 50th percentile and above for general category, 45th percentile and above for physically challenged and 40th percentile and above for reserved (SC/ST/OBC) candidates.
In addition, all admissions must take place through joint guidance. “Any violation will lead to dismissal of the students from the MBBS program and action against the concerned medical college as permitted by law,” said a circular issued by NMC.
