Sir Keir said: 'This is a one -off moment for our national security where we deal with the reality of the world today and the threat with which we are confronted from Russia.
'It is clear that Europe must play a greater role in NATO, since we are working with the United States to secure the future of Ukraine and the threat with which we are confronted from Russia.
'The UK will work to ensure that we keep the US and Europe together. We cannot allow departments in the Alliance to distract from the external enemies with which we are confronted. '
However, business secretary Jonathan Reynolds acknowledged that Sir Keir has no 'easy' job.
He told BBC's on Sunday with Laura Kuensberg: 'There is absolutely, from the American government, a view of Europe and there is a slightly different view of ourselves in the UK.
'Both markets, both allies, will always be fundamentally important to us, but I do think we can play a constructive role in this.
“I am not saying it will be easy, there is a very assertive agenda from the US.”
Tensions have arisen between Mr Trump and Europe on various issues, including his plans for 'beautiful' trading rates.
The concern was raised yesterday when retired general Mr Kellogg told the Munich security conference that negotiations would be between Russia and Ukraine, in which Mr. Trump acted as a mediator – although he emphasized that Europe could have some input.
“To think that he is going to do this alone, we never said that,” said Mr. Kellogg.
In his keynote speech yesterday, Ukraine -President Volodymyr Zensky said: “We cannot exclude the possibility that America could say no to Europe about issues that threaten it.”
Mr Zelensky said: 'A few days ago President Trump told me about his conversation with Putin. Not once he said that America needs Europe at the table. That says a lot.
“The old days are over when America supported Europe only because it had always done.”
He said that the time has come, the armed forces of Europe must be created. “
The Lord Zensky said, “Ukraine will never accept deals behind our back without our involvement.”
Chaos broke out after Mr. Trump and the The Russian dictator had a lengthy and very productive telephone conversation last week, in which they agreed that the conversations to end the conflict should start 'immediately'.
Washington has indicated that every peace agreement is expected to keep Russia the territory that it has annexed since 2014, including the Crimean Peninsula – a huge blow to Kiev after three years of fighting freedom.
There was also deep unrest that Ukraine was with NATO – an official policy of the Alliance – was effectively excluded.
Sir Keir has put himself on a potential collision course with Mr. Trump by telling Mr. Zensky in a call on Friday that Kyiv is on a 'irreversible path' to become a member of NATO.
The US has the pressure on European powers to increase their military expenses.
According to the Sunday Times, Chancellor Rachel Reeves opposes increasing defense budgets above 2.3 percent of GDP in the imminent review of the expenditure.
Downing Street, however, has emphasized that the final decision lies with the PM.
It is said that Defense chiefs have argued for 2.65 percent, above the goal of Labor of 2.5 percent – a level for which there is currently no timetable.
Foreign Secretary David Lammy gave his support for faster increases on Friday, and pointed out that during the Cold War expenditure, 7 percent of GDP had affected.

Mr. Reynolds said: “The entire cabinet, the entire government, I think most people in this country acknowledge the pressure where the world is under, acknowledges that more will have to be spent on defense.
“Now the spending review will set out the route map to that goal.”
He said Sky News: 'The Chancellor knows more than most people the pressure on public services across the board, but defense must be the cornerstone of our national prosperity and our safety.
'There is a whole series of things that the UK does. For example, our contribution to the intelligence services should be considered, I think, as part of that contribution to collective Western safety. '
The UK is already one of the largest contributors in NATO, with American frustration that previously focused on countries such as Germany.
The American officers and Russian counterparts are expected to have conversations in Saudi Aarabia prior to an expected encounter between Mr. Trump and Mr Putin.
