Death of innocent citizenseither in Ukraine or Gaza or anywhere else, is unacceptable, Prime Minister Modi said after talks with Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer, as the shadow of Ukraine once again hung over the first visit of an Indian prime minister to Austria in 41 years.
Recalling the Congress of Vienna in the 19th century that gave direction to peace and stability in Europe, Modi in 2022 reiterated his message to Russian President Vladimir Putin that this is not the era of war. “We discussed in detail the ongoing conflicts across the world, be it the conflict in Ukraine or in West Asia. I have said earlier that this is not the time for war. Problems cannot be solved on the battlefield. Loss of innocent lives anywhere is unacceptable,” Modi said, adding that India and Austria stressed on dialogue and diplomacy for early restoration of peace.
India has a key role to play Ukraine peace: Nehammer
We (India and Austria) are both ready to provide all possible cooperation to achieve this, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said.
Interestingly, Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer said that he and Modi agreed that the West and the Global South should come together to continue on the path chosen at the peace summit in Switzerland. “In this regard too, India has a crucial role to play. The war in Ukraine must end,” he said.
Although India participated at the Swiss summit at the senior official level, it did not endorse the joint statement calling for making Ukraine’s territorial integrity the basis of any peace process, as Russia was not invited to the conference. India’s position is that lasting peace is possible only through a process involving both sides.
“Regarding the war in Ukraine, both leaders supported any joint effort to achieve a peaceful solution in accordance with international law and the UN Charter. Both sides believe that achieving a comprehensive and lasting peace in Ukraine requires the bringing together of all stakeholders and a sincere and serious engagement between the two parties to the conflict,” a joint statement said.
“Chancellor Nehammer conveyed Austria’s great interest in cooperation with IMEC,” the statement said.
