Violence in Manipur: Indefinite curfew imposed in Jiribam district after intense gun battle with militants
Eleven militants were killed in gun battles with security forces in Manipur
NEW DELHI: An indefinite curfew has been imposed across Jiribam district with immediate effect in response to the escalating violence and to maintain law and order, as confirmed by Manipur authorities. The move follows a deadly clash between suspected militants and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in the Jakurador Karong area of Borobekra subdivision.
On Monday afternoon, 11 suspected militants were killed in a fierce gun battle with CRPF personnel after the armed assailants launched an attack, burning local shops and houses and attacking a nearby CRPF camp. The militants launched the attack on the Borobekra police station around 2:30 p.m. and then advanced into the Jakurador Karong area, escalating tensions in a region already hit by recent clashes.
Two CRPF personnel were injured in the gunfight, with one evacuated in critical condition to Silchar Medical College in Assam for emergency treatment. According to officials, the gun battle lasted for about 40 to 45 minutes during which security forces retaliated heavily to bring the situation under control.

In a post on The security forces retaliated strongly.” The post also stated that after the gunfight, the bodies of ten militants, along with weapons including AK-47 rifles, SLR cameras and an RPG, were recovered from the site.
Authorities are investigating reports of five civilians still missing. It is unclear whether they were kidnapped or went into hiding during the violence. The bodies of the slain militants were taken to Borobekra police station for identification and investigation.
The attack underlines the ongoing tension in Manipur, where violence has increased in recent months. Jiribam has seen regular clashes since violence first broke out in June, leaving communities tense. Last week, the killing of a 31-year-old woman in the village of Zairon Hmar increased these tensions, and clashes continue across the region despite efforts to restore order.
Rajiv Singh, Director General of Manipur Police, emphasized the government’s commitment to peace, citing cooperation with security forces and local communities to tackle these “challenging times”. He noted a decline in violence since ethnic tensions began on May 3, 2023, after protests led by the All Tribal Students Union (ATSU) led to widespread unrest over the Meitei community’s demands for Scheduled Tribe status.
Efforts for peace were recently taken as leaders of the Kuki, Meitei and Naga communities in New Delhi entered into dialogue. The Ministry of Home Affairs facilitated the discussions and brought together MLAs and Ministers who jointly called for unity and peace, marking a crucial step towards healing and stability in Manipur.
