HC cites lack of evidence, sedition by junkets and extortion in FIRs against IPS officers
RAIPUR: Chhattisgarh HC Wednesday quashed all three FIRs lodged against the 1994 IPS officer GP Singh in connection with sedition, extortion and disproportionate asset charges.
A division bench noted that the FIRs appear to have been filed solely to harass him. Singh was an ADGP when the FIRs were registered. According to Singh’s counsel, one of the main reasons for quashing the FIR was that the person from whose custody a 1 kg gold bar was seized had not been declared a suspect under the Prevention of Corruption Act, and that the scooter on which it was found was not registered. in Singh’s name.
In the extortion case too, the FIR was registered after a period of six years and the complainant was not known to Singh, the counsel said. And in the sedition case, the original documents were never produced in court and the anti-corruption bureau’s videography did not show Singh “tearing a paper with seditious contents,” Singh’s counsel added.
The court noted that there was no evidence in the FIRs, which “appeared to have been filed solely for intimidation purposes”, leading to their dismissal.
