With ChatGPT on the web you can now search your chat history

OpenAI announced a new feature for its artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot ChatGPT on Tuesday. The new capability allows users to search through their chat history to quickly find relevant information from past conversations. This is a significant improvement over the current solution, which requires users to scroll through the entire history to find the conversation they want. Currently, the feature is only available on ChatGPT’s web portal and is being rolled out to the platform’s paying subscribers.

ChatGPT gets a chat history search function

In one after on X (formerly known as Twitter), OpenAI’s official handle announced the new feature. The ability to search through previous chats is a highly requested feature by users, as it is currently becoming increasingly time-consuming to find relevant information.

With the chat history search feature, users can now find a new magnifying glass icon in the ChatGPT web side panel, placed on the left side of the window. Users can tap this icon to open a text field where they can type specific keywords to find a previous conversation. The text field also shows the recent chats so users can quickly choose one without having to type anything.

The feature is currently being rolled out to ChatGPT Plus and Team users. OpenAI also highlighted that Enterprise and Edu subscribers will get access to the chat history search feature within a week. However, those on the platform’s free tier will have to wait until next month to see this feature.

Notably, those who use ChatGPT’s Android and iOS apps, or use the Windows or Mac desktop apps, won’t get this feature for a while. OpenAI has not revealed whether the feature will be extended to these platforms in the near future.

OpenAI has been quietly adding new features to ChatGPT to stay ahead of the competition. Another recent feature added to the web version of the platform is the ability to search the web. This differs from the original capabilities of the GPT-4o model, which can search the Internet.

With web search – available as a globe icon in the text field – the AI uses only websites to find the relevant information and displays them along with sources for each new piece of information. In terms of functionality, this is somewhat similar to what Perplexity AI offers.
