NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday left for a five-day diplomatic trip to Nigeria, Brazil and Guyana. His three-country tour, scheduled from November 16 to 21, includes participation in the G20 summit in Brazil.

Before leaving, Prime Minister Modi issued a statement marking his first stop in Nigeria, at the invitation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, aimed at strengthening strategic ties between the two countries. His travel program includes contact with the Indian community during his stay from November 16 to 17.

“At the invitation of HE President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, this will be my first visit to Nigeria, our close partner in the West African region. My visit will be an opportunity to build on our Strategic Partnership based on a shared belief in democracy and pluralism. I am also eagerly looking forward to meeting the Indian community and friends from Nigeria who have sent me warm welcome messages in Hindi,” the statement said.
His next destination is Brazil for the 19th G20 Summit, where he will participate as a Troika member. Following India’s G20 chairmanship, Brazil is expected to continue to focus on Global South priorities during its visit from November 18 to 19.
“In Brazil, I will attend the 19th G-20 Summit as a member of the Troika. Last year, the successful Indian presidency elevated the G-20 to the G-20 of the people and integrated the priorities of the Global South into its agenda. This year, Brazil has built on India’s legacy. I look forward to meaningful discussions in line with our vision of ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’. I will also take the opportunity to exchange views with several other leaders on advancing bilateral cooperation added.
The Prime Minister’s final stop will be Guyana, at the invitation of President Mohamed Irfaan Ali. This visit has historic significance as it is the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Guyana in over five decades.
In addition, the Prime Minister will participate in the second India-CARICOM Summit, where he will meet Caribbean leaders to strengthen historic ties and explore opportunities for cooperation.
“My visit to Guyana, at the invitation of HE President Mohamed Irfaan Ali, will be the first ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister in over 50 years. We will exchange views on providing strategic direction to our unique relationship, which is based on I will also pay my respects to one of the oldest Indian diaspora, which migrated over 185 years ago, and engage a fellow democracy as I address their parliament,” said Prime Minister Modi.
“During this visit, I will also join the leaders of the Caribbean partner countries for the second India-CARICOM Summit. We have stood together through thick and thin. The summit will enable us to renew historic ties and expand our cooperation to expand into new domains.” he added in the statement.
During his visit to Guyana, Prime Minister Modi will receive the Dominica Award of Honor from the Commonwealth of Dominica, in recognition of his support during the COVID-19 pandemic and his efforts to strengthen India-Dominica relations.
