Security forces are directed to take necessary steps to restore law and order in Manipur: MHA | India News – Times of India
The ministry warned that strict action would be taken against anyone indulging in violence or other disruptive acts. To ensure effective investigation, important cases have been transferred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). The public has been urged to maintain peace, not believe in rumors and cooperate with security forces to maintain law and order in the state, the statement said.
In a bid to stabilize the situation, the MHA on Thursday extended the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in six jurisdictions of police stations in five districts of Manipur till March 31, 2025. The affected areas include Sekmai, Lamsang, Lamlai , Jiribam, Leimakhong and Moirang, covering districts such as Imphal West, Imphal East, Jiribam, Kangpokpi and Bishnupur. This decision followed a detailed investigation of the state’s security conditions.
Ethnic clashes, which have been ongoing since May last year, have claimed more than 200 lives and displaced thousands. Tensions in Jiribam flared again earlier this year when the body of a farmer was discovered, sparking violence. Ten suspected militants were killed in a recent gunfight after insurgents attacked the Borobekra police station, although tribal groups claim the dead were volunteers defending their villages.
Protests broke out in Churachandpur district on Friday, with demonstrators demanding justice for the dead. During the rally, organized by the Kuki Women Organization for Human Rights, participants marched with banners denouncing the security forces.
