Anthony Albanese drops a big clue to an election date as support for the prime minister plummets

Anthony Albanese has hinted that Australians will go to the polls in May next year.

The Prime Minister dropped the date during a Sky News interview while in Peru for the APEC 2024 summit, before playing down his comments.

Asked about the possibility of elections in March, Mr Albanese said the elections were supposed to take place in May but then came back.

“We have a budget planned for March and the elections will take place in May,” Albanese said.

When asked directly whether the elections would take place in May, Mr Albanese was less certain.

‘Well, then the time has come. It could be in advance,” he said.

Tuesday’s Newspoll, widely regarded as the authoritative survey of voting intentions, showed Albanese’s Labor government trailing the Coalition by 49 percent to 51 percent in the two-party vote.

Labour’s primary drop of 33 percent lagged behind the Coalition’s 40 percent.

Adding to the trifecta of bad news for Labour, Mr Albanese’s disapproval had risen to as much as 55 per cent of voters, compared to just 40 per cent who were satisfied with the way he was performing in the prime minister’s office.

The one thing that might cheer Labor supporters is that no federal government has been dismissed after just one term since 1931, when Labor’s James Scullin saw a then-record loss during the Great Depression after an equally stunning victory just two years earlier.

Daily Mail political editor Peter van Onselen reported this week that Labor MPs feared Albanese was dragging down the party’s votes.

An unnamed MP said Mr Albanese “now comes across as a class traitor”.

The perception that Mr Albanese had given up his childhood in public housing to pursue a life of perks and privileges was reinforced by revelations that the Prime Minister regularly received Qantas upgrades and a clifftop mansion worth $4 .3 million bought.

The clifftop house sits on 790 m² of land and is a short walk from the beach.

Mr Albanese will share the house with his fiancée Jodie Haydon, whose family live nearby.

The home also features a double garage and cathedral-style ceilings.

The Prime Minister recently listed his three-bedroom mansion in Dulwich Hill with a guide of $1.9 million.

Mr Albanese also owns a mortgage-free federation bungalow in Marrickville, while living for free between Kirribilli House and The Lodge in Canberra.

That house in Marrickville earns him between $1,300 and $1,400 in rent every week.

He also earns $564,356 a year as prime minister.
