Jhansi Hospital fire: Another baby dies, toll rises to 12
NEW DELHI: Another baby among the 39 rescued during the Jhansis Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College There have been deaths in a fire incident, bringing the total number of victims to 12, according to officials.
At least 39 babies were rescued from the Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of the hospital on Friday evening, as confirmed by a senior official of the medical college.
IAS officer Kinjal Singh, DG Medical Education, Uttar Pradesh, who was there at the hospital to inspect the reason behind the fire incident, said they will visit the site again.
“We were tasked with carrying out inspections in which three primary parameters had to be taken into account. One of them was to see what was the main reason for the incident, what precautions can be taken in other medical colleges and to find out who is responsible for this. We have carried out our inspection on these points. three parameters We visited the site and recorded the statements of 16 to 17 people. We will conduct another site inspection tomorrow, said IAS officer Kinjal Singh.
Dr. Narendra Singh Sengar, principal of Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College, confirmed to PTI, “Of the 39 children rescued from the NICU fire on Friday evening, one more has died. The child was admitted in critical condition.”
The NICU incident occurred unexpectedly on Friday evening and affected 49 children under treatment. While 39 babies were rescued, initially ten lost their lives due to suffocation or burns, as explained by Dr. Sengar.
He further stated, “One of the rescued children died on Sunday morning, and another, the child of Jalaun resident Vishal and his wife Muskan, died on Monday during treatment due to illness. This brings the total number of fatalities to 12, while 37 children are still under treatment.”
The Director General of Health and Medical Services visited the facility on Monday with a team to assess the situation, including a survey of the affected NICU, said Dr. Sengar, who noted that quantifying the total damage currently remains a challenge.
This incident in one of the primary healthcare facilities in Bundelkhand region of UP has raised important questions about the safety measures in medical institutions. Authorities continue to investigate the cause and responsibility for the incident.
The UP government on Saturday constituted a four-member inquiry committee to probe the hospital fire. Their responsibilities include determining the cause of the fire and any negligence, with findings to be made within seven days.
