The everyday item in your make-up bag that ‘ages you with years’ in winter

WINTER can have a huge impact on your skin, with freezing temperatures and lack of sunshine causing it to become dry and cracked.

The shorter days, increased central heating and lack of humidity can all take their toll, leaving our skin feeling flaky and even itchy.

So maintaining a flawless makeup look in the colder months is not an easy task, especially when we try to hide blemishes and wrinkles.

Most of us have the same approach to makeup all year round, which often doesn’t work well in winter.

This can mean that we may accidentally make ourselves look older when we try to give ourselves a more youthful appearance with holiday makeup.

And an expert has revealed there’s one everyday item in our bags that will “age you by years” over the winter.

Anshul Gambhir, a beauty expert at Gambhir Cosmetic Medicineeven said that it can make our skin look “dull” while highlighting imperfections.

Luckily, she also shared her genius ‘T’ rule that can help us avoid looking older when we use the product.

The biggest mistake is not adjusting your skin care to combat the cold and dryness of winter… your skin can look dull and flaky, making makeup application uneven and less flattering

Anshul revealed that while powder is often the best choice for setting makeup, it’s a double-edged sword in winter.

She explained: “Powder can accentuate dry patches and make your skin look dull.

“Many people try to cover up their paleness with layers of powder, but it only ends up emphasizing the imperfections.”

To avoid this mistake, the expert recommends using it only on the T-zone of your face, that is, the area that extends from your forehead to your nose and chin.

This is because these are considered to be the oiliest areas on the skin of the face, with the cheeks and eyes often being areas with drier skin.

Anshul adds, “Switch to cream-based products instead for a more hydrating finish. Use powder sparingly – only on areas prone to shine, such as your T-zone.

“A light amount of pressed powder is sufficient; Anything else can make you look older, especially if your skin is already dry.”

The makeup expert also revealed three other mistakes most of us make in winter and how to avoid them.

One thing most of us do wrong is wearing shades of foundation or concealer in the winter just like we do in the summer.

Anshul explains, “Most people have to change their makeup colors during winters.

“Failure to do this can create a ‘mask effect’, where your face and neck are noticeably mismatched. It’s not a great look.

“Instead, invest in two foundations – one for summer and one for winter – and mix them as your skin tone changes between seasons. It’s a simple switch that provides a seamless, natural look all year round.”

Another thing we don’t do is give ourselves a sin-kissed glow. While this isn’t something we need to do in the summer with longer days and lots of sunshine, it should be an important part of our winter routine.

The expert advises: “When winter arrives, many people lose that sun-kissed glow and look pale or ashen.

Avoid dark colors during the holidays

MAKE-up expert Anshul Gambhir has also revealed that this winter we should ditch the dark, heavy colors for a more youthful look.

While it may feel natural to reach for darker lipsticks and eye shadows during the colder months, it can also make us look older.

So if we really want to embrace the dark look this festive season, Anshul says we need to be careful.

She says: “Dark lipstick can accentuate fine lines and uneven edges if you have wrinkles.

“Instead, opt for softer, more neutral shades that don’t draw attention to problem areas.

“Smoky eyes and berry lips can feel festive, but they can also age you if they’re overdone.

“Make a balance by choosing colors that match your skin tone without overpowering it.”

“To combat this, add some warmth to your skin using bronzer or a light self-tanner.”

“If bronzer feels too strong, a cream blush in a peach or pink shade can do wonders to brighten your complexion. Think of it as a little sunshine on those gloomy gray days.”

Speaking of our winter makeup routine, we need to make sure it is also different from our summer routine to suit the needs of our skin.

Anshul says, “The biggest mistake is not adjusting your skin care to combat the cold and dryness of winter.

“Without adequate hydration, your skin can look dull and flaky, making makeup application uneven and less flattering.

“Upgrade to a richer moisturizer and consider incorporating nightly masks or facials into your routine.

“A dermaplaning facial can work wonders by removing dead skin cells and giving you a smoother, more radiant surface.”
