Karimganj now Sribhumi: Assam renames district to honor Tagore's vision
GUWAHATI: The Assam Cabinet on Tuesday approved the renaming of Karimganj district in Barak Valley, bordering Bangladesh, as Sribhumi.
Prime Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, while making the announcement, noted that it honors the vision of Tagore, who referred to the present geographical area of undivided India as Sribhumi. “More than a century ago, Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore described today’s Karimganj district in Assam as ‘Sribhumi’ – the land of Maa Lakshmi,” Sarma said via X.
Sarma believed that it was an initiative to restore the former glory of Assam’s southernmost district while meeting the long-standing demand of the people. “This decision will reflect the expectations and aspirations of the people of the district,” he said.
Addressing journalists here, Sarma said the state government has emphasized the need to change the names of certain villages, towns and districts from their current nomenclature to names that showcase their glorious heritage, tradition or modern Assamese names. “Names that are inappropriate from a social perspective were previously assigned to some villages and districts. Many districts possess rich heritage but are still not recognized in their names,” he added. Sarma clarified that renaming Karimganj is an example of this initiative.
