A 32-year-old man is arrested after a teenage boy was found dead in NSW bushland

An arrest has been made in connection with the death of a teenage boy whose body was found in bushland in Sydney’s south-west.

The grim discovery was made in a remote area on Wilton Park Road in Wilton, half an hour outside Wollongong, at around 7.25am on Saturday.

A 32-year-old man was arrested after reporting to Narellan police station around 4pm on Saturday.

Officers from Camden Police Area Command were previously informed of the discovery and set up a crime scene before detectives from the State Crime Homicide Squad arrived.

No charges have been filed as police continue to investigate the incident, although they are treating the death as suspicious.

The 15-year-old has not yet been publicly identified.

NSW Police Inspector Tim Calaman said a group of about a dozen teenagers had camped in the area overnight.

He said police are investigating whether the people camping nearby may have been involved in the boy’s death.

“Police are speaking to a number of witnesses and we are searching the area, buildings, petrol stations and everything down there, which will give us an idea of what actually happened,” Chief Inspector Calaman said.

“There would be evidence at the scene to indicate that it happened in the area where this person may have been… we will have a clearer idea when that area has been processed.

“We currently have a number of active lines of inquiry that we are following up on, there is no specific suspect we are looking for.”

Suptd Calaman said it was too early to speculate how the boy died and whether a weapon or vehicle was involved in his death.

“The forensic investigation and ultimately the coroner will determine how the boy died,” he said.

Police believe the incident took place on Friday evening, but were not informed until 7.35am the following morning.

“There is no indication that an alarm was raised last night,” said Chief Inspector Calaman.

Police have informed the boy’s family of his death.

The chief inspector said it was a tragic event and his thoughts were with the boy’s family.

“The family and certain friends are going to have a hard time this afternoon as they go through this process,” he said.

‘We will continue to support them as we get to the bottom of what happened.

‘It is still too early to speculate whether it was intentional or an accident [and] that will form the basis for the crime scene investigation.”

Wilton Park Road is closed.

Anyone who was in the area since 6pm on Friday or has information or dashcam footage is urged to contact police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
