In her viral videoRenae (@renduh) explained how foam can prevent your clothes from getting cleaned properly and can also damage your washing machine.

According to the professional, detergent cleans your clothes by pulling the dirt from the fibers and rinsing it out.

This creates a thin layer of air, which causes air bubbles to form in your device.

These bubbles pick up the loose dirt. Ideally, both dirt particles are removed during the rinse cycle.

However, if you add too much detergent to your load, your machine won’t have enough time or water to effectively produce extra suds.

“If your washing machine is empty, there will be detergent bubbles left on the laundry,” Renae warned her audience.

Once your washing machine has drained the water, the spin cycle sucks out the excess water, but the dirt ends up back on your clothes.

Excess dirt builds up in your machine, causing it to smell.

Renae referred to an explanation from Tide, which made it clear that too much foam prevents clothes from chafing against each other, which is the very action that cleans clothes.

“If there is still foam after rinsing, your clothes won’t be clean,” she explains.

My towels smell so much better since I did a minimalist wash change – no more mustiness, follow my rule of thumb

This error can also cause foam to remain in your machine. This means that there are too many bubbles in the water and the drain pump cannot remove them.

Renae compared the dilemma to drinking a frothy drink with whipped cream on top.

Once you’ve finished drinking the liquid, it can be difficult to suck up the remaining cream through your straw.

The bubbles become too light and stick to the inside of the cup, making it impossible to reach them without moving your straw.

Because your machine can’t move the drain like a straw, this buildup remains inside.
