A feast for the eyes… Eating pistachios every day can help you maintain your eyesight in old age, research shows
Forget carrots – eating just two handfuls of pistachios a day can improve your eyesight in old age, a study has found.
Scientists say adding 57 grams of the nut to your diet can ‘significantly’ improve eye health as it boosts our lutein levels.
The antioxidant – which is also found in lower doses in carrots, kale and spinach – protects the retina against harmful blue light and acts “like sunglasses for your eyes,” according to the study in the Journal of Nutrition.
Researchers from Tufts University in the US followed 36 people between the ages of 40 and 70, half of whom drank pistachios every day for twelve weeks.
They showed large gains in macular pigment density, which protects the eyes from UV rays, compared to the non-nut eaters.
