‘A Minecraft Movie’ Trailer: Jason Momoa and Jack Black Go on a Magical Mystery Tour

Get ready for a magical mystery tour, because Minecraft is getting the live-action big screen treatment. Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures have teamed up for A Minecraft Movie, set to hit theaters on April 4, 2025.

The video game adaptation, helmed by Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess, places Jason Momoa and Jack Black in a blocky world where, as the synopsis reads, “creativity not only helps you create, it’s essential to your survival.” It also stars Wednesday’s Emma Myers, Peacemaker’s Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Eugene Hansen and Jennifer Coolidge.

The film follows a group of misfits — Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Momoa), Henry (Hansen), Natalie (Myers) and Dawn (Brooks) — who travel through a portal to the Overworld, the omnipresent Minecraft fantasy realm that thrives on creativity and imagination.

With the help of veteran craftsman Steve (Black), the crew embarks on a magical adventure that will reconnect with the qualities that make them unique, and give them the skills they need to thrive at home.

Minecraft the video game first hit stores in 2011. Thanks to its unique world-building and engaging gameplay, Minecraft has sold over 300 million copies worldwide, making it the best-selling video game of all time. It has spawned a number of successful spin-offs, and Microsoft, which acquired the game’s developer Mojang Studios in 2014, has a producer credit on the film.
