AAP's Mahesh Khinchi elected as new mayor of Delhi, defeating BJP's Kishan Lal by 3 votes
NEW DELHI: Aam Aadmi celebration (MONKEY) councilor Mahesh Khinchi was elected to first Dalit mayor of Delhi on Thursday, defeating BJP’s Kishan Lal.
Khinchi got 133 votes while Lal secured 130 votes. Two votes were declared invalid.
The eight Congress council members chose not to participate in the voting process.
“The challenge is to work for the people of Delhi – the way Arvind Kejriwal has done the work for the people of Delhi. My priority will be to work on the cleanliness of the city,” Khinchi said.
The counting of votes for the election of the deputy mayor is currently underway.
Khinchi succeeds Shelly Oberoi, who took up the post in 2023.
In these elections, which had been postponed since April due to a protracted war of words between the AAP and the BJP, the Congress boycotted the elections and demanded a full term for the mayor instead of the shortened term on offer now.
Khinchi’s term will last only five months as elections have been postponed since April.
