ABC announces an appointment of Aboriginal ‘Elder-In-Residence’ to ‘improve cultural safety’ at the National Omroep

The ABC has appointed Professor Jackie Huggins as his inaugural older-in-residence.

Professor Huggins is a Bidjara and Birribi-Gubba Juru woman and prominent author and historian.

She has built up a major career through her work throughout the community and through the sectors about the government and non-governmental sectors.

Professor Huggins became a member of the Order of Australia in 2001 and was recognized for her work in women’s issues, literacy, reconciliation and social justice.

The ABC announced Professor Huggins on Wednesday, would be his older-in-residence for a two-year term of office, which has an option to assess.

In her role as an elderly-in-residence, Professor Huggins will support the employees of the ABCs First Nations.

After an already impressive career, Professor Huggins described her appointment as an older-in-residence as ‘one of my highest honorary pools’.

“My new role is something I never thought I would do when I started my employment at the ABC when I was 16 years old,” she said.

‘I have been a member of the public for a long time and contributes to the ABC.

‘I look forward to deepening that connection by taking the position of the ABC’s inaugural elderly in residence and to meet and meet with people about the divisions and offices of our national broadcaster.

“I am also looking forward to working with the strategy of the Director First Nations, the Bonner Committee and the ABC Leadership Team in setting the stepping stones for our work.”

Professor Huggins told the ABC that she looked out to ‘take care of, to meet and guide’ First Nations People, just as the elderly guided her.

In her role, Professor Huggin’s cultural guidance will offer management and leadership teams through the implementation of the 15 recommendations of the report.

Professor Huggins will report to the ABCs acting director of First Nations Strategy Kelly Williams.

New ABC director Hugh Marks welcomed Professor Huggins and claimed that the National Omroep was now ‘well placed to act strong “in the report.

“We have to take care of our approach to tackle racism issues and achieve any form of inequality to every part of the organization,” said Marks.

“This is a priority for me in my new role as director.”

It comes after SBS Widjabal Wiyabal Bundjalung-Vrouw Rhoda has appointed Roberts AO as the elderly of the broadcaster in 2021.
