Suddenly and unexpectedly

Daniel Yorath had a kick-over in the garden of his Leeds At home with his father Terry – a routine activity for the sporty family – when he suddenly collapsed and died.
Recently signed for LeedsDaniel was supposed to be exceptionally fit and healthy – there were no earlier warning signals and he had never shown symptoms of disease or heart problems before.

Cause of death
A post-mortem study showed that Daniel died of non-diagnosed hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a congenital heart condition.
HCM is a genetic disorder, the severity of which can vary greatly, making the heart muscle abnormally thick, making it more difficult for the heart to pump blood and greatly increase the risk of sudden cardiac arrest, especially with young athletes.
The disease can be asymptomatic and is often only discovered after a sudden death.
In 2022, Gabby BBC Wales told Live: “He played football with my father and fell over.
“My father thought he was just messing around and went to him and rolled him over, and he actually died on the spot – and had no previous indications that there were no health problems at all with him.

‘Like a leader’
“It is like a front hammer who comes down and sends everyone away in different directions, because it is so catastrophic to happen, and not a warning – and everyone responds differently.”
In April 2025, GabbyThat only 19 was when her younger brother died, opened about the effect it had on her on the Ainslie + Ainslie Performance People Podcast.
She said: “I probably ran around and probably ran from my grief and then at the end of my first year at the university, so around the time of his first birthday I had a number of exams for the first year and it all came down.

Daniel’s death inspired Gabby To defend campaigns for heart display in young athletes, aimed at preventing similar tragedies in other families.
She has actively increased awareness about hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and the importance of early detection, to support charities and calls in the name of Daniel.
Gabby has yielded a profession for charity institutions aimed at heart health, including small tickets, who works to improve early detection of heart deviations in children.
