Adani bribery allegations: Farooq Abdullah calls for thorough investigation, Rahul Gandhi calls for arrest
National Conference President Farooq Abdullah on Thursday called for a detailed investigation by the central government into bribery allegations involving Gautam Adani and others, following charges filed by US prosecutors.
“A JPC has been demanded and I hope the Center will take this seriously and conduct a thorough investigation into the matter. He has also been accused before,” Abdullah said.
Earlier in the day, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi intensified his criticism and called for Adani’s arrest. Gandhi alleged that the businessman had violated both US and Indian law and suggested a deeper link between the Adani Group and the ruling BJP.
“Wherever there is corruption, investigation must be done. But the investigation will start with Adani. Unless he is arrested, it will not be credible. So start from there. Arrest Adani, interrogate him and then arrest whoever is involved. Ultimately, Narendra Modi’s name will come out because the entire funding structure of the BJP is in his hands. So even if the Prime Minister wants to, he can’t do anything. In a sense, Adani has hijacked the country Adani,” said Gandhi.
Adani Group denies the allegations
In response, the Adani Group has strongly refuted the allegations, calling the accusations made by the US Department of Justice and the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) baseless.
“As the U.S. Department of Justice itself has stated, ‘the allegations in the indictment are allegations, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.’ All possible legal action will be taken,” a spokesperson said in an official statement.
The group also confirmed that subsidiaries of Adani Green Energy have postponed their proposed issuances of US dollar-denominated bonds in light of the developments.
US accusations and legal proceedings
The charges stem from an alleged bribery scheme for solar energy contracts. A five-count criminal indictment involving Gautam Adani and other Indian executives was unsealed in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York.
