Adelaide named ‘most beautiful in the world’ in prestigious Architectural Digest list – see the international destinations it beat to win top prize

Adelaide has been named the most beautiful city in the world by a prestigious design magazine, beating some of the world’s most popular destinations.

The capital of South Australia beat several world cities including New York, Paris and Barcelona.

Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, was voted the second most beautiful city, followed by Portsmouth, an island city in the Caribbean country of Dominica.

The list, which includes 20 international destinations, was compiled by the world-famous design magazine Architectural Digest.

The magazine described Adelaide as a place where visitors can find ‘surfing, sand dunes and Art Deco architecture’.

‘Adelaide has rolling hills full of high quality grapes, making it the wine capital of the country.’

Several factors were taken into account when compiling the list, such as architecture, historical relevance and natural appeal.

“The best cities offer something you won’t find anywhere else,” the magazine said.

Other cities on the list include Singapore, Amsterdam, Rio de Janeiro and Florence in Italy.

Dubbed the ‘city of churches’ by Australians, Adelaide has also been praised for its iconic buildings and beautiful beaches that are popular with tourists.

Built in 1904, St Peter’s Cathedral is one of the city’s most famous landmarks and is located close to the famous Adelaide Oval.

Glenelg and Brighton Beach are known for their stunning ocean views and dozens of popular cafes and restaurants.

The city is also the gateway to some of the world’s best wine regions, including Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale and the Barossa Valley.

The Barossa Valley has over 170 wineries and is home to several well-known producers, including Penfolds and Jacobs Creek.

This exclusive list comes despite Adelaide recently being named the ninth least affordable city in the world to buy a home.

The bleak findings of the annual Demographia International Housing Report showed Sydney to be the second least affordable city to live in.

Melbourne also featured in the top 10, with Hong Kong taking first place.
