Adobe’s Camera Raw tool can now use AI to remove glass reflections
Adobe is introducing a new feature for its Camera Raw plug-in that makes it easier to remove reflections from glass surfaces, the company announced Thursday. The tool, called Reflection Removal, uses artificial intelligence (AI) and works for window reflections in images. It is currently available in Technology Preview to get community feedback, the company said. Notably, Adobe is also releasing an adaptive profile for black and white in the public beta in Adobe Camera Raw.

In a blog afterAdobe has detailed how its new Reflection Removal feature works. Glass reflections usually occur when an image is recorded through a window. While not ideal, it is sometimes the only way to capture unforgettable moments, such as the Northern Lights during a transatlantic flight. Adobe says its new AI tool is designed to be used in such situations.
It works by separating the two images captured with different content such as white balance and sharpness. The function also detects if there is an overlapping reflection between the two. The AI model used by the Reflection Removal tool then declutters these images.
The AI model is trained on thousands of images of different subjects without any reflection, Adobe said. Pairs of images are then added together to simulate more examples, but this time to form images contaminated by reflections. The results are fed into the AI model, which is then asked to predict the original photos, rewarding correct answers. This process is repeated with different examples to train it.
Currently, the Reflection Removal feature only works for raw images with support for the following supported formats: DNGs, CR2s, ARWs, and ProRAWs. It can be used with the Camera Raw plugin in the Technology Previews section of the preference panel. While it’s only available through Camera Raw, the company says it will be rolling out to Adobe Lightroom soon as well.
