After the Pixel 8, Google announces the production of this smartphone in India

The Pixel 8a will be Google’s latest smartphone to be assembled in India, the company confirmed on Tuesday. The handset made its debut in India on May 7 as a successor to the Pixel 7a, joining the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro in Google’s latest smartphone portfolio. The development comes after Google India announced on the same day that production of the standard Pixel 8 has begun in India, fulfilling a promise it made during its Google for India event in October 2023.

Google Pixel 8a Made in India

During a media roundtable ahead of the Pixel 9 series launch, Google made the announcement about the Pixel 8a’s production in India. According to the company, assembly in the country will begin “soon.” However, the company did not give a definitive timeline on when these ‘made in India’ devices could hit store shelves.

For the production of the Pixel 8, Google’s global manufacturing arm Compal has reportedly partnered with India’s local electronic manufacturing services (EMS) firm Dixon Technologies. The company’s plans include an initial production capacity of 100,000 units per month, of which about 25 percent would be for export to global markets.

While it is said to be made in India, it is unclear if the production of the Pixel 8a would result in a potential price drop for the smartphone, which usually happens due to the lower cost of local manufacturing. Notably, Google slashed the prices of its entire older Pixel lineup after the introduction of the Pixel 9 series.

Google Pixel 8a Price in India

After the price revision, the Google Pixel 8a price in India starts at Rs. 49,999 for the 128GB variant. It comes in two storage options — 128GB and 256GB. The model with the higher storage configuration costs Rs. 56,999. While the new pricing has been announced, Google says that they will go live on Flipkart, the company’s only authorised online retailer in India, in the coming weeks.

The Google Pixel 8a comes in four colors: Aloe, Bay, Obsidian, and Porcelain.
