Airtel closes Wynk Music app, hires all employees
Bharti Airtel will exit the music business and shut down its Wynk Music app, sources said. The information was confirmed by an Airtel spokesperson hours after the company announced a strategic partnership with iPhone maker Apple for video and music streaming. The company will take over all Wynk Music employees.
“Airtel is planning to close Wynk Music in the next few months. It will absorb all employees into the company,” a source told PTI.
When contacted, Airtel spokesperson confirmed the development.
Airtel launched the Wynk Music app in 2014 and is estimated to have over 100 million subscribers.
“We can confirm that we will be dissolving Wynk Music and that all Wynk Music employees will be integrated into the Airtel ecosystem,” the spokesperson said.
The company has reached an agreement with Apple to offer iPhone customers access to Apple Music with special offers.
“Airtel users will get access to Apple Music. In addition, Wynk Premium users will receive exclusive offers from Airtel for Apple,” the spokesperson said.
Earlier in the day, Airtel announced that Apple TV+, Apple’s video content platform, will be accessible later this year via its video streaming platform Xstream and Apple Music for premium users of Wynk Music.
Airtel will now be offering special deals on Apple Music to its customers using iPhone.
Airtel’s business-to-customer portfolio, comprising Airtel Wynk, Airtel Thanks and Xtream, has over 220 million active users.
