Aldi shoppers smoke like sold out wooden toys already on eBay for ‘three times the price’
PARENTS in the UK are furious after missing out on Aldi’s new wooden toy range, only to find it on eBay for “three times the price”.
The budget supermarket’s Wooden Toy Event hit the center aisles yesterday just in time for Christmas and sold out within minutes.
The limited edition range includes 84 toys, largely made of wood, according to the Aldi website.
But despite the high volume, a number of loyal customers missed the chance to get their hands on one of the products wooden toys.
Aldi bosses even warned shoppers to run and not walk to the nearest store ahead of the drop.
They said, “They’ll be gone faster than your chance of sleeping in.”
This meant mums and dads were queuing outside shops from 6am in the hope of getting their hands on some toys for their children.
One of the best buys was the £24.99 Small wooden Aldi supermarket in the town and £9.99 Little Town wooden toy role play bags.
The £7.99 Small town wooden Cuthbert cake was also very desirable.
But also in the early morning there were resellers looking to buy multiples of every available product and list them on eBay for a high price.
And now, just 24 hours after launch, items from the range are listed for “triple the price” on the auction site.
Among the Wooden Toy Event’s current eBay listings is the Cuthbert Cake for £35 plus £3.99 postage – a whopping £31 extra.
Another seller has listed the Takeaway Roleplay Bag for an eye-watering £25 plus £6 postage – despite it costing less than a tenner in store.
Others are trying to sell the wooden toy set from Aldi supermarket for £59.99 plus £6 shipping – more than DOUBLE the original price.
A number of virtuous Aldi shoppers took to TikTok this morning to share their anger at resellers.
“The fact that you haven’t put limits on how much people can buy is shameful Aldi”, one muttered.
The Rise of Resale
In recent years, auction sites such as eBay have seen a significant increase in the number of users selling viral products at high prices.
From kitchen essentials to limited-edition beauty items, products suddenly gaining popularity on platforms like TikTok and Instagram are selling for two to three times their original value.
Aldi’s Specialbuys are usually subject to the new trend, due to their limited edition.
Some consumers find this practice frustrating, claiming it takes advantage of desperate buyers and exploits them with high price tags. Others see it as a business opportunity, with resellers profiting from popular items.
“People are greedy and fill multiple carts to resell. It’s terrible.”
“It’s so disgusting that resellers are buying up everything to sell for a profit, while us normal people can’t go to Aldi first thing in the morning because we have to go to work,” said another.
“There should be a limit per item,” said a third. “People who start early and get five of each are terrible.”
Some shoppers even complained that resellers are offering the items on Vinted, which is against the second-hand app’s policies.
Other buyers insisted Aldi to take action against resellers.
One suggested: “You really need to put restrictions on these toys because people are selfishly buying them to resell them for crazy amounts of money on Vinted.
“It’s so unfair to people who want affordable toys for their children.”
A second said: “If you made more of things, people wouldn’t have to buy overpriced things on eBay, and there would be no incentive for people to buy too much and resell at hugely inflated prices.”
Aldi confirmed on its TikTok page that most stores have “had their share” of the wooden toys, meaning they won’t be restocking.
