Allswell is a bed-in-a-box Walmart brand of mattresses that strives to provide quality for those on a budget. A hybrid mattress usually costs a lot of money, but Allswell changed that when it entered the market. It is a very affordable bed that can help different types of sleepers sleep better.
I everything tested including feel, firmness, motion isolation, and edge support. Read on to find out just how comfortable the Allswell Hybrid really is and how well it performs.
First impression
When I get asked the question, “What is the best mattress I can buy that isn’t expensive?” Allswell is a broadly appealing option that stays in the top few spots. Compared to similar hybrid mattresses on the market, the price and quality are really hard to beat. I was expecting a rinky-dink thin hybrid mattress, but that’s definitely not the case here.
It’s just a clean, simple hybrid mattress without the bells and whistles. If you’re on a budget or want to skip all the fuss, that’s fine with you. For me, it feels bouncy like a innerspring mattressbut the layers of foam on top help give it a little more softness. To me it still feels a little more supportive than soft. You’re more on the Allswell mattress than in it.
When you first take the unit out of the box, it smells like plastic. But once you put your sheets and duvet over it, the smell is not as noticeable and disappears after a day or so.

Firmness
The bed will be slightly firmer out of the box, but like most mattresses in a box, it will be about medium to medium-firm after a few days. firmness scalewhich equates to a score of approximately 6 out of 10, with 10 being the firmest.
Comfort
The Allswell mattress is made with three layers and is a standard 10 inches thick. You can’t cut the mattress open to see what’s inside, so I’ll explain the construction for you.
The bottom layer is made of thin, dense foam to support the pocketed coils above. Then you’ll find a 6-inch innerspring system that is made up of pocketed coils that are individually wrapped, with the goal of helping with motion isolation. Each coil moves independently of each other, as opposed to the “if one moves, they all move” design.
Above that is a transition layer of polyurethane foam, which feels neutral and is more responsive than memory foam. Finally, the top layer has 3/4 inch of gel memory foam under the white quilted cover.
Feeling
The bed feels springy in the bottom layer, but I can feel the pressure-relieving foam in the upper layers doing its work, gently molding to the curves of my body. That said, the bed is easy to shift positions as the springs and polyfoam help counteract the sluggish nature of the memory foam beneath the quilted cover. The firmness also helps provide support, preventing you from sinking into the mattress.
Motion isolation
Even though the Allswell is a hybrid mattress, the motion isolation is quite effective. It actually dampens movement quite well. After placing a glass of water on the end of the Allswell mattress and walking around the bed, the glass barely wobbled. If you toss aggressively, you might feel some movement, but overall it does a pretty good job.
Edge support
The amount of support I felt around the edges of the Allswell wasn’t great — not as great as other hybrid mattresses I’ve tested, such as the Saatva mattress or the Purple hybridbut considering how little the Allswell mattress costs, I didn’t expect to be so impressed. You don’t feel like you’re rolling off the side of the bed, but there is more give around the perimeter compared to comparable hybrids.
Temperature
The Allswell’s hybrid construction and slightly beefier profile make it a better candidate than memory foam mattresses for regulating the temperature. I wouldn’t cold sleeping mattress; it’s more temperature neutral. I didn’t get too hot on the Allswell mattress, but it’s not going to be as breathable or cooling as something like the GhostBed Luxe or Purple hybrid.
Who is it most suitable for?
Most beds aren’t always made to accommodate all types of sleepers. Here’s who we think the Allswell mattress is best for.
Position
I think this mattress is perfect for stomach, back, and combination sleepers because it provides enough support to keep your spine in a neutral position, but still provides enough pressure relief so the bed isn’t too firm. You might not like it if you’re a strict side sleeper, especially if you weigh under 150 pounds. If that sounds like you and you’re more interested in a soft mattress, check out our list of the best mattresses for side sleepers has more options to consider.
Body type
The Allswell Hybrid is suitable for all body types, from small to large. However, Allswell also has a foam mattress for those under 220 pounds who want to save even more money.

The main highlight and probably the biggest reason why you would buy an Allswell Hybrid mattress is the price and overall value. Whether you are looking for a cheap mattress for yourself, your guest room, or your kid going off to college, it doesn’t get much more affordable than this. A queen-size Allswell mattress costs around $389 on the Allswell website, depending on the type. Allswell and many other mattress brands regularly offer discounts, making the mattress even cheaper.
Trial period, warranty and shipping
Allswell follows what is pretty standard business policy in the bed-in-a-box industry. You get free shipping and free returns if you decide you don’t think the mattress is right for you. You have 100 nights to decide whether or not you like it, and if you decide to keep it, your bed is covered by a 10-year warranty.
Other mattresses from Allswell
- Allswell Luxe: The Allswell Luxe is a 12-inch mattress that’s a step up from the flagship model. I’d rate this mattress a medium-firm on our firmness scale, making it ideal for combination sleepers. This mattress feels quite springy, and the memory foam conforms to your curves while providing plenty of support. Like other Allswell mattresses, this is a hybrid mattress, meaning it has memory foam and individually wrapped coils to reduce motion transfer.
- Allswell Brick: The Allswell Brick Hybrid 12-inch mattress is the firmest model from the brand. This bed features individually wrapped coils, which is great for reducing motion transfer if you’re a co-sleeper. On top of the coils, it has a 2-inch layer of high-density foam, which adds to the firmness of the Allswell Brick. A 1-inch layer of copper-infused memory foam tops this bed for optimal temperature regulation. This bed is best for back and stomach sleepers.
- Allswell Supreme: At 14 inches tall, this mattress is the most luxurious bed Allswell offers. Unlike the Brick, which has a copper-infused topper, the Supreme has a built-in euro top for extra softness. This bed also has individually wrapped coils for maximum motion isolation, and reinforced edges provide good edge support. The memory foam layer is great for pressure relief, and I found this bed to be temperature-neutral when sleeping. The medium firmness level should accommodate most sleeping positions.
The final verdict
Not everyone wants to spend a thousand dollars on a mattress, but everyone certainly needs a good night’s sleep. I commend Walmart for making such a quality mattress for such a low price. It is pressure relieving enough for most side sleepers, and back and stomach sleepers are well supported. It meets many requirements and has an affordable price tag — one of the cheapest on the Internet, by the way.
This mattress might be something for you if:
- You have a limited budget.
- You mainly sleep on your back, on your stomach or in a combination of these three sleeping positions.
- You are a medium to large side sleeper.
- You are looking for additional support.
- You want a more neutral look for your mattress.
You may not like this mattress if:
- You want a memory foam bed.
- You want a luxury mattress.
- You weigh less than 68 kilos and sleep on your side.
- You generally like softer mattresses.
