The first fighter plane in Australia, which has been designed and built in for more than 50 years, has completed its first flight outside of a test facility.
The MQ -28a Ghost Bat Drone successfully completed its first flight -Codenaam -Skening Carlsbad on Raaf Base Tindal, near Katherine in the Northern Territory.
The exercise was part of a wider series of tests to demonstrate the possibilities of the Ghost Bat in a simulated combat scenario.
The MQ-28A is an AI-compatible, autonomous, non-described collaborative aircraft, designed to fly past traditional fighter jets and to take mission rolls that are typically performed by pilots.
The Ghost Bat was developed by Boeing Australia in collaboration with the Royal Australian Air Force and marks an important step forward in the Australian space innovation.
More than 80 Australian companies have contributed to the program.
“This is a huge achievement of cooperation work between the Royal Australian Air Force and Boeing Defense Australia,” said Wing Commander Phillip Parsons.
“Our success is also due to continuous work with the Collaborative Autonomous Systems Project Office, the headquarters of Air Force, Air Warfare Center and the local basic quadrons on Raaf Base Tindal.”
Live fire tests of air-air weapons are planned for the end of 2025.

The MQ-28A Ghost Bat will save Aussie Lives according to the Defense Force
“What we are going to do this year is, we are going to accelerate in a weapon of the drone,” said Boeing Defense, Space & Security Interim President and CEO Steve Parker.
‘We will certainly look at Air-Ground in the future, but our focus priority is air-air. And we will talk about what the weapon is in the future, at a future time. ‘
Exercise Carlsbad tested the power of the MQ-28A Ghost Bat to be used, re-used and work in unknown circumstances.
“The most important intention of exercising Carlsbad was to understand all fundamental inputs for the possibility in relation to the MQ-28A,” said Wing Commander Parsons.
Before the flight, a series of checks was carried out on the ground to ensure that all systems functioned well.
Wing Commander Parsons said that the plane would offer the combat mass needed to defend Australia and its national interests.
“Capacities such as the MQ-28A are important because they will save Australian life and offer us the combat mass to defend Australia and his national interests,” said Vleugel commander Parsons.
Canberra is optimistic that the Ghost BAT program offers significant export options for the Australian Defense industry.
At least one Spookwatt has already been seen in the United States.
