AMD’s Ryzen 7 9800X3D is hot stuff – literally, because you just burned out a motherboard

  • AMD’s Ryzen 7 9800X3D Just Burned Out on an MSI X870 Motherboard
  • The user on Reddit reports the error code ’00’, which indicates a CPU problem
  • There is currently no confirmation from AMD as to whether this is an issue

The AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D has received a lot of praise thanks to its upgraded 3D V-Cache for gamers, putting it at the top of our ranking of the best gaming CPUs. However, a disturbing user report has revealed that the processor on an AM5 motherboard socket has burned out. Could this be an AMD fault?

The unfortunate ones Reddit user shared images of the new 9800X3D processor showing fire damagealong with the MSI Tomahawk X870 motherboard connector burned out with bent pins. The user also mentioned a ’00’ error code that appeared when he tried to post his new chip (self-test at boot).

The 00 error code can indicate a random boot or CPU problem (it’s a fairly common error code), and Wccftech noted that other users had posted approximately the same code on the Tomahawk X870 on MSI’s own forums, although it is unlikely that those users had the same problem. We noticed a known issue with the 9800X3D’s predecessor (the 7800X3D), leaving users with burned processors and motherboards (eventually resolved via BIOS updates for multiple mobo partners).

Wccftech claims that the motherboard could be responsible for the burnout problem in this case, suspecting that the X870 was pushing ‘excessive’ voltages through the gold contact surfaces, which led to the CPU burning out. However, some commenters on the Reddit thread have also speculated that the board itself was defective based on the affected user’s images, as it appears that part of the socket’s plastic casing has broken off – preventing the chip from inserting properly the holder can be placed. socket.
