Andorra 0-1 England: Thomas Tuchel will feel hollowed out by this terrible display against the world’s 173rd-arranged side … It showed little to build for the future, Ian Ladyman writes

By the time we reached the death shoes of this grim excuse for international sport, a good part of the England support was on the way to Barcelona. Cheap beer surpasses cheap football every time.
That they stayed for so long was admirable. This was a terrible late afternoon of activity against a team that arranged 173 in the world. England won and did not set up any injuries. They remain at the top of their free pass from a world cup qualifying group. That is the very best that we can say for it. On to the next, a friendly against Senegal Nottingham Forest On Tuesday.
At least a crowd will be there. Here – with Andorra who moved from home two and a half hours while their renovated stadium is waiting for the UEFA declaration – there was hardly any. Fans of England on both ends with the top layer closed. On one side a bit of ‘home’ supporters.
At the kick -off it was tempting to wonder why a few Spaniards had not ran away to see England play.
But then we remembered that Thomas Tuchel‘s Squad has two Real Madrid Players in it. Then we remembered that Spain had just understood their nation by beating France 5-4 on TV on Thursday. And then – the most important thing of all – the game started and England reminded us how bad they can be when the mood brings them.
Why do English teams of a generation always seem to have a day like this?

The last 20 years of the national team have strewn these performances among them and just when they succeed in convincing us that they are better than everything that all nowadays Steve McClaren is all about again.
So England won it and will continue. They were booed after a aimless first half and then took the lead by Harry Kane in the 49th minute. We wondered at that stage if an avalanche of goals would follow, if there would be some sort of re -admission of those in white.
But that didn’t come and so we went to a conclusion and England was booed again at the end.
As far as Tuchel himself is concerned, he will feel hollowed out. The coach of England knows that he only has limited time and limited competitions between now and next summer’s world cup in America. He had asked his players here for a performance of conviction. “We have to win and win well,” he said. Only one of those requirements were met and it came with the narrowest possible margin.
Tuchel has now oversee three games and have all been won without a goal being admitted. That is the positive way to look at it. The more prosaic truth is that England’s football still has to be among their new coach. It has been at best modest. This was indeed a show that would have been in the middle of the European championships last summer and that is not a compliment.
Tuchel must get some patience even if he doesn’t have much time. These kinds of games – on a warm day at the end of a long season – are not easy. Andorra defended with bodies and no ambition and with some organization and nothing of it ever leads to tension and spill.
But thankagukank, England was slow and predictable. Their football wore little in the imagination and intelligence. There was no evidence that the attacks of relationships were formed. No telepathy. Nothing on which a future can apparently be built.
In terms of the selection of Tuchel it spoke to strength but also to weakness. England has a number of attacking players who would desire other countries. But this team also had Jordan Henderson as his midfield Pivot, a central midfielder, Curtis Jones, right-back and a right back, Reece James, left. Maybe we should not be so surprised about what we got.

As we knew they would do that, England had found the first half – 87 percent of the possession to be precise – but largely blind alleys.
England’s support had been quite enthusiastic early on. But when England’s football faded to Gray, they did that too. And by the time the peace came, we could only be the startle of the little Andorran Band on the other side and offensive songs about the English prime minister of the traveling supporters.
Half ended up with a Bellingham film head that was held comfortably by Alvarez, but England was more progressive after the break and managed to take the lead for four minutes.
Jones’s pass through the Andorran Back Line to Free Kane was excellent, but that also paid for the rescue of Alvarez when he improved to meet the captain of England. Madueke was able to pick up the ball on the other side and when he drove him low over the goal, Kane stretched to distract the high in the roof of the goal from six meters.
That brought some relief to England, but did not lead to a certain increase in their game. Kane tried a chip and Morgan Rogers hit a man alone to slide while he shot.
Andorra ended the game after he only made himself once, Guillaume Lopez who passed by then Burn jump to have blocked a shot by Ezri Konsa with 15 minutes left. There would be no wonder at Espanyol for the Minnows. Similarly, there was little to encourage England.
