- Android XR has been shown by Google on I/O 2025
- It is highly dependent on AI to deliver many of its functions, such as live translation
- Different glass brands deliver Android XR functions
Bee Google I/O 2025 Google finally gave us what we all waited for (well, what I have waited for): a good Android XR showcase.
The new Google operating system Made for Android -headsets and Android -Glasses is plagued as the next big rival of Meta’s Horizon OS -The software that the Meta Quest 3 And Quest 3s – And we finally have a better picture of how it stacks.
Admittedly, the showcase was a bit short, but we do know several new details about Android XR, and here there are four that you need to know.
1. Android XR has Gemini in the core
Although I would claim that Google’s Android XR showcase was not as profound as I wanted, it showed us what the operating system did in the core: Google Gemini.
The advanced AI of Google is the function of the OS the determining function (at least that’s how Google it puts it).
Glasses-Gemini can recommend a place to eat windows and then offers you instructions on the screen where you can find it, it can perform live translation, and on a headset it can use it Google Maps‘Inwolling image to virtually transport you to any destination you request.
Especially on the glasses, this completely hands-free approach combined with cameras and a head-up display google Gemini in its most usable form. You can get the assistant’s help as soon as possible if you can ask for it, no mess to require your phone.
I want to see more, but this certainly looks like a solid upgrade on the same Meta AI function that the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses offers.
2. Android XR is for more than Samsung
We knew for Google I/O Samsung Was an important Android XR partner -in addition to Qualcomm, which offers all the necessary Snapdragon chipsets to provide the Android XR hardware with power.
But we now know that various other companies are working with Google.
Xreal has showed the Aura projectthat Android XR will bring to an improved version of the bound glasses that we know (such as the Xreal One) – with aura complete with a camera and snapdragon.
Subsequently, Google also teased a glasses from Gentle Monster and Warby Parker, which implies that it cooperates with fashion brands, instead of just traditional technical brands.
In addition, given that Gentle Monster and Warby Parker offer a very different design -aesthetics, this is good news for people who want varied fashion choices for their new Smart Glasses accessories.
3. Project Moohan still comes ‘later this year’
The Android XR headset Project Moohan Is still set to start in 2025, but Google and Samsung still have to confirm a specific release date.
I hoped that we would get something concrete, but constant confirmation that Moohan will land in 2025 is better than delayed.
Google and his partners did not want to give us a fixed dates. Xreal calls his project Aura the second official Android XR glasses suggests that it will land somewhere after Moohan, but for something else – we will have to wait and see what comes out.
Google certainly has the biggest player of XR – Meta, with its hugely popular Quest Headset – hardware – a few strokes and gave his rival something to worry about.
However, this showcase is far from a Finisher, especially not in the headset department.
Meta’s Connect 2025 showcase in September is expected to show our similar Glass Technology and Functions, and depending on the release data, the Meta Android XR can beat.
That said, competition will only be a good thing for our consumers, because these rivals are fighting for price and functions to seduce us to one or the other. Unlike earlier fights in the XR room, this certainly seems like a balanced fight and I am excited to see what happens next.
