AOC says she ‘woke up’ to her ‘Indigenous Puerto Rican ancestry’ as she protested Dakota pipeline involving Native American tribes

  • Ocasio-Cortez responded to an Instagram Q&A to a Bronx voter who said she wanted to learn more about her Taino roots
  • Taino are the people native to the Caribbean who lived in places such as Cuba, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, and the northern Lesser Antilles
  • AOC said meeting Indigenous groups while protesting the Standing Rock Pipeline in North Dakota brought her closer to her roots
  • “It really just clicked that this is crazy, like the grace they gave to say ‘no, you’re a relative’ was really formative for me,” she said.

Democratic Socialist Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said during a live Q&A on Instagram that she claims “indigenous heritage.”

The second-term rep said meeting indigenous groups while protesting the Standing Rock Pipeline in North Dakota prompted her to connect with those roots.

“One of the things that first started to awaken me and connect me deeply with my native heritage was connecting with the Lakota Sioux at Standing Rock,” Ocasio-Cortez said.

“It really just clicked that this is crazy, like the grace they gave to say ‘no, you’re a relative’ was really formative for me. While we may not be and come from the same exact lineage, there is a resemblance to that lineage,” she added.

“And it’s important for us to recognize that we were raised and told growing up that we were extinct, that Tainos don’t exist, and it’s very important for Puerto Ricans to understand that that story is now being challenged.”

Ocasio-Cortez is not the first Democratic member of Congress to claim Native heritage, as Senator Liz Warren infamously made headlines by taking a DNA test to try to prove her Native American ancestry.

Warren eventually apologized to the Cherokee Nation after releasing the results of a DNA test that showed only a small portion of her ancestry was Native American.

Former President Donald Trump began calling Warren “Pocahontas” in the spring of 2016 to tone down her attacks when she threatened to become a major surrogate for his presidential rival Hillary Clinton.

Ocasio-Cortez has mentioned several cultures as part of her heritage and claims to be of European, Jewish and African descent.

She told a 2018 Hannukah service in Queens that her family came from Sephardic Jews who had escaped the Spanish Inquisition.

“As is the story of Puerto Rico, we are a people that are an amalgamation,” she said. ‘We are not one thing. we are black; we are native; we are spanish; we are European.’

She went on to say in the Instagram Q&A that Taino culture has been usurped by Americans without accreditation, citing the Taino deity ‘Juracan’ of chaos and disorder who has formed the root of the word hurricane.

The New York City Representative is in Puerto Rico this weekend with fellow members of Congress to attend events about potential sovereignty. Ocasio-Cortez supports self-determination for Puerto Ricans regardless of status.
