Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York said on Monday that she would not pursue that she would become the top democrat in the House Oversight Committee, with reference to the emphasis on seniority as an obstacle.

“It is actually clear to me that the underlying dynamics in the caucus have not shifted much with regard to seniority that I think it would be necessary,” Mrs Ocasio-Cortez, 35, told reporters.

Mrs. Ocasio-Cortez initially sought the position last year, but lost in an internal competition to representative Gerald E. Connolly van Virginia, 75. Mr. Connolly announced last week that he would take a step back from his duties While he is confronted with cancer, leading younger, more progressive legislators leads to pitch himself for the position.

Mrs. Ocasio-Cortez, who was chosen in 2018, is one of the Most prominent young Democrats. Her decision not to strive for the position seems to erase the way for others in her fungus to Jockey for it. The top democrat of the Supervisory Committee is one of the most visible opponents of the Party for the Trump government.

But her comments make doubts about whether house democrats could arise their long compliance with the seniority system, even if many members of their party call for generation change.

The failed offer of Mrs. Ocasio-Cortez last year was seen as a disappointment for those in her party who wanted to break a long-established but unwritten rule that seniority should determine who gets prominent leadership roles, even if other younger members replaced older colleagues in some lower committees.

Weeks after the internal vote, she left the supervisory committee for a place in the influential energy and trade committee. That step would have complicated all the efforts that she may have made to follow Mr. Connolly: the rules of the Democrats house allow Wetgevers to only lead committees they are.

But Mrs. Ocasio-Cortez, who spoke for large crowds during a tour with Senator Bernie Sanders van Vermont, is one of the brightest stars of her party. Various Democrats in the supervisory committee said last week that they were waiting to see if she was interested and said she was a skilled messenger who would make a good foil for the Trump government.

The position of Mr. Connolly is not empty. During a recent hearing, representative Stephen F. Lynch van Massachusetts fulfilled his duties. Mr. Lynch, 70, said that he is interested in following Mr. Connolly.
