Apple Brings RCS Support to These Countries with iOS 18 Dev Beta 3: Report

Apple has expanded support for Rich Communication Services (RCS) to Canada, Spain, France and other countries, weeks after it launched in the US, a report has revealed. For years, the Cupertino-based tech giant has faced criticism from its rivals, mostly Android smartphone makers, for failing to support the relatively new messaging standard and instead prioritizing its own iMessage service. At its 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple finally announced that it would bring support for RCS starting with iOS 18, the upcoming iPhone operating system update.

RCS messages extended

According to a 9to5Mac reportRCS messaging is now available in Canada, France, Germany, and Spain following the rollout of iOS 18 Developer Beta 3 on Monday. As a result, it now supports more carriers. In Canada, Videotron, Telus Mobility, and Bell are said to support RCS, while users in France may be able to access it with SFR. O2 and Telefonica are also said to be bringing RCS support to Germany and Spain, respectively.

This development comes weeks after Apple introduced RCS support in the US with the iOS 18 Developer Beta 2 update. A new toggle for the feature was reported in the iPhone’s settings. While the feature was still believed to be dormant, users on social media have claimed that they now have access to it. Messages sent using RCS appear to have an RCS banner in the chat window.

In the US, only three carriers reportedly support the RCS messaging standard developed by Google: AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon.

RCS is a messaging protocol that claims to provide better interoperability for messaging across platforms, through support for GSMA’s Universal Profile. According to For Google, it offers better features compared to standard SMS, giving users the option to share high-resolution media and larger files. It also brings typing indicators, the ability to make video calls, and an improved group chat experience.

RCS messages can be sent using the default messaging app on smartphones, but it also works with the Google Messages app, if the former does not support RCS. As of 2020, RCS is said to support 90 telecom operators in 60 countries.
