Apple could soon launch AirPods with cameras: Ming-Chi Kuo
Apple is reportedly working on new AirPods that will come with cameras. These new AirPods will feature infrared (IR) cameras, similar to the ones built into the iPhone’s Face ID receiver. The Cupertino-based tech giant’s new true wireless stereo (TWS) is said to offer an improved spatial audio experience when used with the Apple Vision Pro, the company’s mixed-reality headset. Last month at WWDC, the company introduced new features for AirPods, including gesture-based controls for interacting with Siri, head tracking capabilities while playing games, and improved audio for voice calls.
Apple reportedly launching AirPods with cameras
In a medium afterTF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said: “My latest supply chain research indicates that Apple plans to mass-produce new AirPods with camera modules by 2026, with an IR camera similar to the iPhone’s Face ID receiver (not the transmitter).” Notably, an earlier report in February also hinted at AirPods with cameras and advanced sensors.
The new functionality for AirPods is reportedly being added to improve the spatial audio experience when paired with the Vision Pro and future Apple headsets that the company launches. It is said that if a user is watching a video on the mixed-reality headset with the new earbuds and turns their head in a specific direction, they will hear louder or more emphasized audio from the sound source in that direction. The overall impact is said to be a more immersive experience.
According to the report, the IR cameras on the AirPods will be able to detect changes in the surrounding imagery. These can detect when a Vision Pro user moves their head and change the orientation of the video player in the augmented reality or virtual reality environment. It is further said that the earbuds will also be able to offer in-air gestures to interact with the device.
Kuo claimed that Taiwan-based Foxconn is Apple’s supplier for the IR cameras. The supply chain giant reportedly plans to produce 18-20 million units, which roughly equates to 10 million AirPods. However, these are projected numbers and the final output would depend on market conditions.
